Astera was born the first daughter to Estrella and Haderos Frayus in the Eastern regions of Onderon. The family had been renowned for their mercantile endeavors over the years. While her younger siblings took after their parents to oversee the family's vineyards, Astera was encouraged to pursue her own forte, which was an eye for luxurious fabrics and jewel-crafting. She thus resurrected the business that once belonged to her paternal great-grandmother, Chalcedony Etoffes, and expanded it.
From her early teens she was apprenticed to Lady Lineray Flamme in Iziz, who worked as one of the primary jewel designers for the noble houses of Onderon. Proving her worth, Astera exhibited an interest in a wide array of jewel styles, often loving to work with bold colored gemstones that would match the customer's personality.
When younger, Astera had a strong relationship with her Zabrak maternal grandmother, Irosh. Out of all the grandchildren, she was the one most eager to learn from the Zabrak. She traveled to several worlds with her, and Tirana also trained Astera in the Petranaki martial arts. Astera studied under her grandmother's tutelage for fifteen years, until the older warrior passed away when Frayus was in her early twenties. At that time, and with the blessing of both parents and siblings, Astera inherited her grandmother's five weapons: Picador's Spear, Confessor's Whip, Petranaki Scimitar, Caster's Net, and Beastwarden's Shield.
One day a local criminal, Mr. Agarten, decided to have one a thief delivered to her as free labor so he could repay the debt he had got himself to. Having only so much leeway in getting out of this weird deal, and being also very curious and trying to keep the upper hand against questionable individuals, Astera accepted the deal. That day, she inherited a stranger with a death wish, Vishan, and provided him with a place to stay and work to do even though dealing with him could be a handful. No matter what, she refused to let him die and give this satisfaction to Agarten, and somewhere along the way she found herself caring for Vishan.
