Alliance Defense Forces
From TheHolo.Net Forums Wiki
The Alliance of Free Planets Combined Defense Forces, more concisely referred to as the Alliance Defense Forces (ADF) is the unified military infrastructure of the Alliance of Free Planets, responsible for defending the borders and sovereign worlds within Alliance Space from all threats, both foreign and domestic.
The bulk of the Alliance Defense Forces consists of the Alliance Fleet: essential to the deployment of most other aspects of defense, such as the Alliance Marine Corps and SpecForce. While the Fleet retains it's traditional headquarters on the Mon Calamari homeworld, Dac, all other aspects of the military are headquartered on the Alliance capital, Bothawui.
History
Leadership
The central leadership of the Alliance Defense Forces is the Alliance High Command. This body consists of the senior officers from each branch of the Defense Forces, and is led by the Supreme Commander, Alliance Defense Forces, Admiral Reshmar. The High Command is overseen by the Command Council, which consists of the Commanders of the five Alliance Fleets, the Marine Corps, the Starfighter Corps, SpecForce, and the Quartermaster Corps; nine officers in all, plus the Supreme Commander.
Due to the geographically dispersed nature of the Alliance Defense Forces, meetings of the High Command are seldom conducted in person. A conference room located on Dac allowed the commanders to meet in a holographic manner similar to that used by the Jedi Council and Grand Army of the Republic during the Clone Wars.

Organisations
Alliance Fleet
Originally, there was only "the" Alliance Fleet: a single entity that collected together the handful of starships controlled by the Alliance to Restore the Republic. Following the liberation of Dac, the Alliance's star fleet grew large enough to distinguish between the Command Fleet - a mobile base of operations from which the Alliance High Command coordinated the Rebellion - and the Supply Fleet, which moved supplies and ordnance between the Alliance's secret bases and loyal worlds.
After the Battle of Endor, the Alliance had gained enough public support to operate numerous numbered fleets. The Command Fleet became the Alliance 1st Fleet and remained mobile. The bulk of the Mon Calamari Fleet became the Alliance 2nd Fleet, focusing on the defense of what was at the time the Alliance's capital. The Alliance 3rd Fleet concentrated on the war effort in the heart of the Galactic Empire, around worlds such as Kashyyyk and Duro. The Sullustan Home Guard became the backbone of the Alliance 4th Fleet, patrolling space in the southern portion of the Outer Rim Territories. Following the Liberation of Bothawui, the Alliance 5th Fleet was added, and the Supply Fleet was designated the Alliance 6th Fleet.
With the formation of the Alliance of Free Planets, the Alliance Fleet received an influx of new resources, as well as a drastic expansion in the territory that it was required to defend. The Fleet was restructured: while the 1st Fleet and 6th Fleet remained amorphous and mobile, the remaining four fleets were assigned to specific geographical areas. The 2nd Fleet became responsible for the space surrounding Dac, the Carshoulis Cluster, the Gordian Reach, the refugee worlds of New Alderaan, Sanctuary, and Ossus, and the border with the Tion Cluster, with the assistance of the Cizerack Trade Fleet. The 3rd Fleet was assigned to defend Roche, Kashyyyk, Onderon, and the Hapes Cluster, with the assistance of the Hapan Royal Navy. The 4th Fleet was assigned to Bothawui, and gained additional responsibilities for brokering cooperation and joint operations between the Alliance Defense Forces and the Alliance Sector Forces. The 5th Fleet meanwhile was assigned to protect Sullust, Sluis Van, Malastare, and Naboo.
Traditionally, the headquarters of the Alliance Fleet has been on Dac, due to the sizeable contribution to the Fleet made by the Mon Calamari. Though most branches of the Alliance Defense Forces have relocated to Bothawui, Fleet Headquarters remains on Dac.
Alliance Marine Corps
During the Galactic Civil War, the Alliance to Restore the Republic had no standing army, instead relying on the Alliance Sector Forces, Alliance Special Forces, and the Alliance Fleet Regiment to conduct all of it's ground operations, boarding operations, and to protect it's ships and facilities against infiltration. Under the Alliance of Free Planets, the Alliance Regiment was expanded to become the Alliance Marine Corps, a mobile infantry and mechanised infantry division, to be used as a response force against invasions, uprisings, and other dangers to the sovereignty of the Alliance and it's member worlds.
Much of the Marine Corps is integrated into the organisational structure of the Alliance Fleet, with a Marine Division corresponding with each Fleet. For the Second, Third, Fourth, and Fifth Fleets, the Marine Divisions are geared towards providing security aboard starships and space stations; the main bulk of the Marine Corps is associated with the First Fleet, where it is organised as a mobile and mechanised response force.
The current commander of the Alliance Marine Corps is General Forlon. Like the Alliance Fleet, it is headquartered on Dac.

Alliance Sector Forces
During the days of the Rebel Alliance, the Alliance Sector Forces were regional commands tasked with leading the Rebellion in a particular sector. Their nature and disposition varied from world to world: on some they were underground insurgency movements; on others they were overt military organisations, militias, and defense fleets. Under the Alliance of Free Planets, "Sector Forces" became the collective term for any of the independent fleets and planetary militias still operating within Alliance Space. Typically, these sovereign militaries were responsible only for defending their own worlds, but under encouragement from the Alliance Defence Forces some aided in the defense of their stellar neighbours, while some of the larger forces - like the Hapan Royal Navy - provided resources to aid in the defense of the entire Alliance. Some, such as the Mon Calamari Sector Force, were fully nationalised and absorbed into the Alliance Defense Forces in their entirety.
Alliance Supply Corps
Created from the combination of Alliance Ordnance & Supply and Alliance Support Services, the Alliance Supply Corps encompasses all of the logistics and supply needs of the Alliance Defense Forces. The Supply Corps is responsible for the acquisition and production, distribution, and maintenance of all military assets for all branches of the Alliance Defense Forces. It provides oversight of starship construction facilities like the Mon Calamari Shipyards and Sluis Van Shipyards; coordinates the production of starfighters with military contractors like Incom-Koensayr-Meorrrei, Slayn & Korpil, and Hoersch-Kessel Drive; and arranges for the provision of weapons and ordnance, food and medical supplies, uniforms, utility droids, training, and anything else required to keep the Alliance Defense Forces operating smoothly. The Supply Corps also administers training academies on behalf of the Alliance Fleet, including the Naval Academy on Vogel 7.
To facilitate this, the Supply Corps operates a small flotilla of transports, freighters, cargo ships, and mining vessels, loosely organised as the Alliance 6th Fleet. They work closely with the Ministry of Supply - their civilian counterpart - which is led by the former head of Ordnance & Supply, Senator Tukphen. Like the Alliance Fleet, it is headquartered on Dac.
Rank Structure
Having formed out of an assortment of militaries and agencies, the Alliance Defense Forces have a very complex and sometimes misaligned rank structure.
The Alliance Fleet based it's rank structure on the old Republic Navy. Enlisted personnel were classified as Crewman and Petty Officer, with various grades of Chief Petty Officer denoting particular seniority. Trainee officers were Midshipman, and Ensign denoted junior officers who were usually limited to administrative roles. Sub-Lieutenant, Lieutenant, and Lieutenant Commander comprised the bulk of a starship's officers; on some small vessels, a Lieutenant Commander could even serve as CO. A Commander was typically the CO of a mid-sized vessel, or XO of a larger craft, but the fact majority of Alliance commanders were a Captain, commanding anything from a single vessel to a small formation of ships. Originally, the Alliance Fleet had only one rank of Admiral, and some senior Fleet commanders were even Generals due to other service; as the fleet grew, Commodore was added to denote a Squadron or Task Group commander; Rear Admiral for Task Force commanders; and each Admiral of a Fleet had a Vice Admiral serving as their deputy.
Each Alliance Sector Force made use of it's own bespoke and traditional rank systems, but the Alliance Special Forces employed a normalised progression. Trooper, Lance Corporal, and Corporal denoted basic soldiers, with various grades of Specialist (such as Staff Corporal or Bombardier) being awarded based on a soldier's specialism. Sergeant and specialised variations thereof represented SpecForce NCOs, up to and including Sergeant Major. The rank of Warrant Officer was reserved primarily as a transition step between Sergeant and Officer. Like an Ensign in the Fleet, Second Lieutenant was usually reserved for administrative or assistant roles, with field leadership beginning at Lieutenant (sometimes clarified as First Lieutenant), and following a traditional Army progression as far as Colonel; but notably not using ranks such as Commander, because of their association with the Grand Army of the Republic and the Stormtrooper Corps. Originally, a Colonel progressed directly to General, but the rank of Brigadier was added as the Alliance grew in size, to allow for more hierarchy at senior levels.
The Alliance Starfighter Corps was established mostly as a stand-alone Command, and had it's own unique rank structure. Ground crew were ranked as various grades of Technician, with a Flight Sergeant serving as the most senior role. Under the Alliance Defense Force, these grades were spaced out to provide equivalency with enlisted Naval personnel providing deck support on Alliance starships. Officer ranks began at Flight Officer (a basic pilot) and Flight Lieutenant (a flight leader), and used Commander to refer to the leader of a Squadron. As units became more complex, ranks such as Captain, Colonel, and General were added from Army traditions - echoing the Grand Army of the Republic - with Major added in as a senior Commander, making it senior to it's like-named SpecForce equivalent.
