The Praetor-class Star Battlecruiser, also known as the Praetor-class battle cruiser, was a large and powerful warship class that came into use sometime before the rise of the Galactic Empire.
Design
The Praetor-class Star Battlecruiser was designed with multiple reactor systems that were more powerful than those of the Imperial-class Star Destroyer. The class was thus larger in size than contemporary Star Destroyers, at four kilometers in length, and was designated a Star Battlecruiser. The Praetor-class has a single ventral hangar positioned amidships. The fighter wing consisted of nine fighter squadrons, one recon squadron, and two bomber squadrons. The racks were positioned on the flanks of the ventral hangar for faster fighter depolyment. The forward and aft sections of the hangar housed the assault deployment vehicles and transports.
Unlike the smaller Imeprial class, the Praetor had no large barbette batteries. The heavy turbolasers are positioned along the port and starboard rim of the ship, in batteries of five cannons to a battery, all with a full forward-to-broadside arch of fire. Smaller turbolaser and ion cannon batteries are placed throughout the dorsal and ventral surface of the hull.
History
Introduced shortly after the Imperial I Star Destroyer, the Praetor Star Destroyer was intended as a command vessel to complement the already large and impressive Imperial Star Destroyer. Using many of the same systems as an Imperial I Star Destroyer, and having a larger profile. More powerful by far than a standard Imperial Star Destroyer, and boasting a larger complement of carried troops and vessels, the Praetor was to be a vessel that would keep entire sectors of space in line. As such, in the early years of the Empire, Paetor-class Star Destroyers were used in the same role which Super Star Destroyes would later serve.
At the time of the introduction of the Praetor Star Destroyer, the vast majority of KDY's production capacity was being used to build the Empire's massive fleet of Imperial-class vessels, since having a sufficient supply of Imperial Star Destroyers was seen as being the Imperial Navy's top priority. As a result, relatively few sectors received delivery of Praetors to serve as command vessels. By the time orders for Imperial Star Destroyers began to slacken, freeing up production capacity for more command ships, the Executor-class and Super-class vessels had been designed. As these newer, larger vessels began to be delivered to the highest priority sectors, production ceased on Praetors, and the existing vessels were re-assigned to less important sectors.
