Design

Several differences existed between the Imperial I and Imperial II, including the replacement of the tractor beam targeting array between the command tower's sensor globes with a communications tower, and the removal of point defense weaponry. The Imperial II had a Heavier reinforced hull, stronger deflector shields, and greater firepower than the Imperial I class. The main upgrade came in the form of eight barbette mountings, each mounting eight gun-barrels, which are arranged in rows of four on either side of the superstructure. They replace the heavy turbolasers and heavy ion cannons on the Mk I.

The Imperial II-class Star Destroyer had many design problems. It was said by alliance Special Operations officers the Star Destroyer had 174,000 design flaws waiting to be exploited. Despite these flaws as well as the vast resources required to maintain and crew the vessels, they remained formidable front line units.

An improved version of this vessel, called the Imperial-III class Star Destroyer is entering service as of 8.150 ABY, configured primarily for space combat.

History

The class began with the prototype Imperial II known as the Empire. It was more powerful than later ships of the class. The first operational ships of this class began to appear in service shortly before the Battle of Yavin.
