The Strike-class Medium Cruiser was designed by the Loronar Corporation for the Imperial Navy, as a general-purpose vessel. Modular in design, it was capable of being modified to fit various mission profiles, making it one of the more versatile - and surprisingly affordable - mid-range craft available during the Galactic Civil War.
The size of a frigate, two Strike Cruisers were considered equivalent to a Victory-class Star Destroyer, thanks to their heavy load of weapons, strong shields, and high sublight speed. The craft could be modified for different loadouts, allowing it to serve as everything from a garrison support ship or planetary assault vessel to a space superiority cruiser or escort frigate. Usually equipped with just one squadron of TIE Fighters, it could be modified to carry up to three, or could have its internal capacity dedicated entirely to cargo making it a formidable transport vessel. Some of these vessels were even commendeered by the Rebel Alliance, and modified to carry Gravity Well Projectors.
Unfortunately, its great strength was also a notable weakness. The mechanisms used to provide its modular profile also created weak points in the ship's defense, and fire concentrated on the sections linking the ship together could cause the vessel to fragment. Fortunately, the low cost - relative to Imperial wealth, at least - made many of these components expendable, and damaged vessels could be quickly repaired with replacement parts at most Imperial facilities.
