A public icon, Captain Dan Myers is California's newest and greatest superhero. Holding himself up as an icon of decency, good citizenship, and state pride, he sees himself as a role model to young mutants who have recently discovered their powers: and most importantly, unlike the criminals, vigilantes, and terrorists growing in numbers across the United States, he feels no need to hide who or what he is. He is an advocate of Mutant Registration.

However, the truth is somewhat different from the public persona that the self-proclaimed "Captain California" presents. He is in fact a visitor from an alternate reality, who has merely assumed the identity of the real Daniel Myers. The military agency Vanguard is aware of his true identity, but for now they are content for him to keep his secret, even going to great lengths to help him maintain the charade; in exchange for as yet undisclosed return "favours" in the future.

As part of his cover, he is "officially" considered part of the Vanguard chain of command.

Alternate Earth
In his youth, Dan Myers was something of an NHL prodigy, breaking numerous age and performance records during his early career. A lifelong, avid fan of the California Buccaneers, he was confident - and arrogant - enough to refuse to play for any other professional NHL team. Ultimately his dream came true, and he found himself joining the C-Bucs as their new star centre. By 2000 he had been appointed team Captain, and was rumoured to have been the leading Team USA candidate for Captaincy during the 2002 Winter Olympics.

Unfortunately, the Mutant Uprising of 2001 occurred before he had the opportunity to shoulder that honour. Myers and his team were in Canada at the time, and became stranded when the borders were closed. As the revolution spread north, the C-Bucs found themselves in the middle of a Civil War: rather than rely on the military to fight the war for them - "The Canadian Army? Are you serious?" - Myers led his team into taking up arms, turning their hockey skills into warrior skills. His charismatic leadership not only helped the Buccaneers survive: it infected the local population as well, and inspired a full-blown resistance movement, who called themselves the Canada Buccaneers.

It was during this time that Myers' mutant ability manifested, and while it took several years, it ultimately proved to be his downfall. One of the biggest criticisms of Myers - both as a player and a freedom fighter - was his obsession with showboating. Rather than simply get the job done, he felt compelled to do so with style and flair; attracting the attention of more followers to the resistance cause yes, but also from the mutant leadership.

When his powers of gravity manipulation were brought to the attention of the mutant Psion, great lengths were taken to ensure his capture, and transport to a facility in the United States. A rescue effort was planned by members of Vanguard - more as a means to deprive Psion of his prize than to actually rescue the Canadian hero.

The mission was a partial success: the team led by T.J. Harriman did succeed in derailing Psion's plans, and preventing him from stealing Myers' powers; however, it did so by destroying the experimental device Psion was having built, and claiming Myers' life.

Or at least, so it was believed.

Los Angeles
Rather than being killed in the quantum singularity that the device's destruction caused, Myers was instead catapulted half-way across the continent, and into a parallel reality. Myers found himself in a world where a mutant uprising had never occurred, and where mutants were still a mistrusted minority: not as tyrannical overlords. Craving the adulation that he had experienced as a sportsman and a resistance hero, Myers chose to style himself as a superhero: something that until then, California had been lacking.

Of course, he didn't truely consider the implications of his actions - such as the fact that there was already a Daniel Myers in existance in the alternate reality. Overconfidence compelling him to use his real name, the military agency Vanguard quickly saw through his deception, and moved to apprehend both the extradimensional intruder and his local doppelganger.

Having already established himself as a popular hero in Los Angeles, Vanguard felt that it would be a political mistake to make the overnight celebrity disappear, particularly in light of recent events. Instead, it was proposed that Vanguard would assist Myers in maintaining the illusion that he was in fact the Daniel Myers of this reality: in return for his assistance - without question - should they ever request it. In order to make Myers' disguise foolproof, his local doppelganger was removed from the equation, and his memories were transferred into alternate Myers' mind.

Myers was allowed to return to his life as a superhero in Los Angeles, but now has to live with the knowledge that his selfishness and arrogance caused the death of an innocent man, husband, and father: a man who he has to spend every day pretending to be.

Powers / Abilities
Gravity Manipulation - Like many pairings of alternate reality doppelgangers, the two versions of Daniel Myers have connected but opposite abilities. While the "real" Daniel is able to increase the effect of gravity on any object he touches (including himself), the alternate Daniel Myers is able to reduce it until his weight is effectively zero. This allows him to create the appearence of various classic and cliché superhero powers: he is able to lighten an object to simulate super strength, and reduce his own weight to jump great distances or leap tall buildings in a single bound. By lightening himself he can simulate feats of agility, and is even able to levitate by reducing his own weight to zero, though he is unable to create the thrust necessary to fly.
Current Timeline of Roleplays
  • In a Mirror, Darkly - Dan Myers is held captive by the mutant Psion. He escapes, but is transported to a parallel Earth.
