Captain Dan Myers is a survivor from an Alternate Reality where the United States is a post-apocalyptic wasteland, transported here by a science experiment that went drastically wrong. His actions immediately after arrival caught the attention of the media, and of S.H.I.E.L.D: rather than risk the public learning about alternate realities, arrangements were made for Dan to assume the identity of his counterpart, a Captain in the United States Air Force whom they had "reassigned" to S.H.I.E.L.D.

Despite being presented to the public as a military officer, in reality Dan is a Captain in the National Hockey League of his home reality. After the mutant-caused disaster that caused the United States government to collapse, the Sacramento All-Stars became the nucleus of a resistance cell, which Myers led. In order to maintain the illusion that the "world's first superhero" is a serving USAF officer, Myers is being trained to "act" the part.

History

A youth prodigy in the sport, Dan Myers broke numerous age and performance records during his early career. He was the youngest player to be top goal scorer in the Junior League while playing for the California Buccaneers and, after going professional with the Sacramento All-Stars, he became the youngest Captain in the history of the NHL. He was even rumoured to be the top choice as Captain for Team USA during the 2002 Winter Olympics.

The Mutant Uprising on his world began in 2001 with the destruction of New York, followed quickly by most other major cities across the East Coast. When Washington D.C was destroyed the government collapsed, and with the military proving to be ineffective against the mutants and their abilities, the country quickly collapsed. In the aftermath, refugee cities and resistance networks formed; Myers and his team took it upon themselves to find and protect as many survivors as they could, and get them into the safety of one of the fortified cities.

Myers eventually became part of the resistance based out of Vanaheim, an underground refugee city-state located beneath Nevada, Utah, and Colorado. He became one of the foremost members of the resistance there, and was part of the Guardians: an elite team. During a raid on an enemy stronghold, Dan was caught in the blast wave when an artificial sun went supernova. The blast wave tore a hole in spacetime, but Dan managed to somehow survive, and was propelled into another reality.

Having come from a world where mutant abilities were used openly and benevolently as a matter of daily life, Myers' actions of casual heroism caught the attention of the local media. Not yet aware of the fact that there was another him in this world, he made the faux pas of identifying himself by name: revealing Daniel Myers' mutant status to his wife, and to his superiors at the Air Force, from whom he had been hiding it. The "real" Myers dropped off the grid and, after being brought in by S.H.I.E.L.D, arrangements were made for Dan to assume his identity, including his rank.

Dan joined the SHIELD Alpha Team - the Avengers - to be it's public face and spokesperson. Officially he is the team's leader, though unofficially leadership decisions in the field are made by the considerably more qualified John Lester.

Myers has the ability to reduce the effect of gravity on objects he is in contact with, including himself. This allows him to lighten and lift heavy objects; and to lighten himself so he can leap tall buildings in a single bound. He is not able to reduce the weight of an object to zero; nor is he able to reverse the effects of gravity.

Myers also makes use of a few items of alternate reality technology, including a pair of glasses that use backscatter x-rays for night vision and to see through objects; a pair of repulsor boots that allow him to "skate" a few inches above the ground; and a pair of energy gauntlets that fire focused blasts of bioelectric energy. The power source of these devices is unlike anything seen by S.H.I.E.L.D scientists however, and has led to considerable problems replicating and recharging his tech.
