Meredith "Mac" MacKenzie was an undergraduate student studying in New York when the virus hit. Though he has no formal training, he met [[Kaylee Zheng]] and has spent the bulk of the time since working as her research assistant. With Alicia Viego - a woman he met and fell in love with after the outbreak of the virus - he had a daughter, [[Alex MacKenzie]], who is immune to the virus. Unfortunately Alicia was killed in an accident; Mac has raised their daughter alone for the last several years.
