The Hornet-class carrier was a Sullustian produced vessel with a large fighter capacity. These vessels were often used as flagships in the early years of the rebel alliance.
Design
The Hornet-class was readily identifiable by its slim design and bridge structure mounted amidships on the dorsal hull. The modernized variant boasts powerful baffled ion drives to reduce their sensor profiles and an array of offensive weapons. Its speed allows the Hornet-class to engage superior enemies and retreat for backup before being overwhelmed. The design is balanced to carry a large number of starfighters while still supporting heavy weapons capable of fighting capital ships. An advanced targeting array maximizes the effectiveness of the limited weapon emplacements.
The massive Hanger ran nearly three quarters of the length of the vessel. A single large bay was positioned on the prow of the vessel for shuttles, transport, and assault craft. A second large hanger was positioned amidships with two port and two starboard launch and recovery bays for the Fighter Compliment of the ship. While designated as a carrier the Hornet-class was still a formidable platform in ship to ship action. Turbolaser batteries and cannons ran the length of the ship as did Ion cannons. These could be sued for defense in air wing operations or as offensive weapons when needed. Quadlaser cannons gave the Hornet-class anti-projectile and Anti- fighter defense.
History
The Hornet-class Carrier was a large warship developed by SoroSuub Corporation prior to the Clone Wars. In the early years of the war, the Rebellion had to deal with decades-old warships held together by the sweat and ingenuity of the Rebel technicians. With major-shipbuilding worlds like Sullust and Dac throwing their support behind the Alliance after the Battle of Yavin, Mon Mothma asked for their full effort in modernizing the Fleet. In an effort to speed up development, Sorosuub targeted older designs and updated key systems with state-of-the-art technology. The first result of this was the modernized Hornet-class Carrier. The new modernized Hornet Carriers first entered the Alliance Fleet a year after the Battle of Hoth, and it performed admirably during the many Campaigns. As the Alliance to Restore the Republic worked to earn legitimacy as the governing power in the galaxy, the Hornet and its fighter squadrons helped maintain regular patrols of allied sectors, keeping an eye out for outlaw warships and Imperial raiders.
