"We agree that the time for diplomacy and politics has passed. It is now time for action... Therefore let this be an official declaration of rebellion! Today, we all vow to change the galaxy, and one day the galaxy will indeed be free!"
―Bail Organa

Also known as the Rebel Alliance, the Alliance to Restore the Republic is a military and political entity established to wage war against the Galactic Empire, in the hopes of bringing about the restoration of the Galactic Republic.

Since its formation it has achieved several significant victories, though not without several major setbacks. In its current standing, the Alliance has finally reached the state where it can maintain and defend territory free from Imperial control: notably the free worlds of Chandrila, Dac, Sullust, and Bothawui. Beyond the support of those liberated nation states, the Alliance boasts the support of citizens-in-exile from Alderaan, Corellia, Ithor, and Roche, as well as a variety of freedom fighters from Imperial repressed worlds across the galaxy.

In recent months, the Rebel Alliance has managed to force an alliance with a number of of survivors of the Jedi Purge, and hopes that through the restoration of the Jedi Order they will take another important step towards a renewed Republic.

History

The Rebel Alliance was formed in 6 BE - two years prior to the Battle of Yavin - with the signing of the Corellian Treaty by the leaders of anti-Imperial resistance groups on Alderaan, Corellia, and Chandrila. They nominated the Senator for Chandrila - Mon Mothma as their leader, and she drafted and distributed the Declaration of Rebellion: a document addressed to Emperor Palpatine, officially declaring war against the Imperials.

Because of it's significantly smaller scale when compared to the Imperial military, the Alliance was forced to rely heavily on remaining mobile, and exploited a variety of guerrilla tactics. A prime example was the Alliance SpecForce, formed to provide the Alliance with a small, mobile, and effective force of commandos. Another, significant advance in that regard came with the defection of key leaders from the Incom Corporation, who provided the Rebel Alliance with the iconic T-65B X-Wing Starfighter. Mon Mothma was also able to secure an alliance with the Mon Calamari, who were - after the Battle of Yavin - able to provide the Rebellion with Star Cruisers.

Following the destruction of Alderaan in 2 BE, the Alliance won a significant victory against the Empire at the Battle of Yavin, when they destroyed the superweapon responsible. In the aftermath, several planets began to protest against the Imperials and their actions, and factions of Ithorians and Bothans in particular rallied to the cause. It was after Yavin that the Alliance Fleet was formed under Admiral Ackbar, and various efforts were made to appropriate a variety of ships for the Rebel cause. After the destruction of the Rebel base on Hoth, the Alliance High Command was transferred to the Rebel Flagship, Home One.

After discovering the construction of a second Death Star was in progress, the Alliance rallied its fleet before mounting an assault. The ensuing Battle of Endor resulted in the death of many of the Empire's ranking military leaders - and even Palpatine himself - but also claimed the lives of many heroes and commanders of the Rebel Alliance, leaving the Rebellion crippled.

Rallying under new leadership, the Alliance continued to propagate the Galactic Civil War. Though a number of military engagements met with varying success, two notable battles saw the liberation of Sullust and Bothawui, two years after Endor.

Leadership

The Alliance to Restore the Republic is led by a Chief of State. They serve as the President of the civilian government, and also as the Commander-in-Chief of the Alliance Military. The incumbent Chief of State is Mon Razien, of Chandrila.

The Alliance Advisory Council is composed of representatives of several Alliance governments who have given the most lives in battle to defeating the Empire. This council is the primary advisory body to the Chief of State, responsible for approving or disapproving the proposals of the Chief of State. Furthermore, the Advisory Council has the right to dismiss a Chief of State with a two-thirds majority vote, providing a check to the powers of the Chief.

Additional to the Advisory Council, the Alliance Cabinet is a central organ of the Rebel Alliance civil government, consisting of the heads of its ministries. Cabinet members are responsible for converting the Chief of State's policy decisions into realized action items.

Military

The Chief of State, the Minister of War, and the Alliance Chief of Staff formed the Alliance High Command - the the military nerve center of the Rebel Alliance, responsible for setting over-all strategy for the Alliance, direction operations of the Alliance Fleet and allied forces, command of all Alliance ground forces, and coordinating the Alliance Sector Forces.

The High Command also included the Alliance Supreme Allied Commanders - often shortened to simply Supreme Commanders - who oversaw the various key aspects of the Alliance military, each representing one of the Alliance's galaxy-wide commands. Notable former Supreme Commanders include Admiral Ackbar of the Alliance Fleet, General Airen Cracken of Alliance Intelligence, and General Crix Madine of SpecForce, all of whom were sadly lost at the Battle of Endor.

For much of the Alliance's operation, the Alliance High Command remained in motion, based at various times on Dantooine, Yavin IV, and Hoth, before ultimately transferring to the Alliance Fleet's command ship, Home One. In recent months however, the High Command has returned to having a fixed headquarters, this time on Bothawui.

Space Forces

The Alliance Fleet is the main maritime force of the Rebel Alliance, operating its space-borne forces. While only consisting of a small fraction of the ships available to the Imperial Navy, the Rebel fleet is the most powerful single military unit available to the Alliance High Command. Due to the funds for the Rebellion, most warships employed in the Rebel fleet are either captured or donated by friendly/allied individuals and worlds, the vessels that were openly bought were usually cheap and/or outdated.

Closely associated with the Alliance Fleet is the Alliance Starfighter Corps, which operates the Rebellion's squadrons and wings of starfighters. Actually formed prior to the Fleet, the Starfighter Corps differs significantly from its Imperial counterpart in that most fighters are hyperspace-capable. While some Starfighter units are deployed aboard starships in the Alliance Fleet, others operate through hyperspace from alternative Rebel bases.

In addition to the Alliance Fleet, the Alliance Support Services operates a force of transports and freighters that fall under an independent chain of command, tasked with obtaining and distributing supplies, equipment, and ordnance to the Alliance's fleets, forces, and facilities. Though originally established as a separate command, it has recently been absorbed into the Alliance Fleet, and is now treated as the de facto Sixth Fleet.

Ground Forces

Because of the conditions under which the Rebel Alliance formed, there was little call for a standing army. Instead, ground forces were organised into the Alliance Sector Forces which, as the name implied, oversaw the operations of the Rebel Alliance in a given Sector. The size and role of these Commands varied considerably: the Corellian Sector Force for example is an underground network of insurgents; the Bormea Sector Force became a home guard for the planet Chandrila; and the role of Bothan Sector Force has been taken up by the Bothan Defense Force.

In addition, the Rebel Alliance established the Alliance SpecForces, to function as as an elite and mobile force of commandos. SpecForce was broken down into various Divisions, some of which were led by a General and operated as standing units, while others were deployed to specific sectors and fell under the authority of the General of the local Sector Force; one Division was assigned directly to Alliance High Command meanwhile, performing more select missions. SpecForce commandos usually fell within one of seven disciplines, ranging from covert infiltration and reconnaissance behind enemy lines, to combat in urban or wilderness conditions; some were trained in space operations, while others provided heavy weapons, communications, and other forms of unit support.

The Rebel Alliance also mainted a number of Alliance Troopers to provide personnel to guard its ships against boarding parties. Later however, they became a more typical Order of Battle unit - to stand in direct opposition to the Imperial Stormtrooper Corps - and filled the offensive role of an Alliance "Army", versus the covert / commando role of SpecForce.

Clandestine Forces

No military organisation can survive without effective intelligence on its enemy, and the Rebel Alliance is no exception. Alliance Intelligence built on a variety of resources - including the Bothan Spy Network - and fulfills a variety of closely-related roles within the Alliance. Like Imperial Intelligence, it conducts missions of espionage and intelligence-gathering concerning foreign governments and militaries. It also duplicates some of the internal security responsibilities of the Imperial Security Bureau, acting to oppose Imperial efforts at espionage witin the Rebel Alliance.

Occupying a nebulous position between SpecForce and Alliance Intel, Alliance SpecOps is a special operations organization designed to perform the missions that the others cannot. Generally operating as Mission Groups, SpecOps units often consist of mercenaries or smugglers under contract to the Alliance, and generally fall outside the standard chain of command. These Mission Groups are intended to be able to operate for long periods without support or back-up, gathering necessary resources in the field as needed, and operate with a very consequential, ends justify the means mentality. Nowadays, the lines between SpecOps and Alliance Intel are increasingly vague, with the differences relating perhaps more to training and payroll than to the specific roles and responsibilities of their agents and operatives.

Though less glamorous than the other clandestine agencies of the rebel Alliance, the Ordnance and Supply Command is a nebulous branch of the Rebellion that answers directly to the Minister of Supply. The organization's initial responsibility was to procure weapons, ordnance, and vital supplies - food, medicine, et cetera - to assist the Rebellion's efforts to combat the Empire; over time it has expanded to incorporate research and development as well, and now interacts with almost every command and agency within the Alliance, engaging the services of the Alliance Fleet, SpecForce, and Intelligence in it's efforts to procure resources, before passing those resources to Support Services for distribution. The Supreme Commander is one of only a handful of individuals within the Rebel Alliance authorised to engage the services of privateers.

Territory

Out of fear of incurring the wrath of the Galactic Empire - particularly since Alderaan was destroyed for doing so - very few planets have openly declared their affiliation with the Rebel Alliance, instead choosing covert means through which to support the efforts to restore the Republic. However, that is not exclusively the case.

Free Planets

Following the Declaration of Rebellion written by Senator Mon Mothma, the planet Chandrila declared itself independent from the Empire. Efforts were made by Imperial forces to establish a permanent presence on the planet, but these were resisted. The Rebels have since then largely managed to maintain the planet's liberty, but because of key strategic locations elsewhere in the Bormea Sector - such as the Imperial Academy on Corulag - the sector itself remains heavily under Imperial control, making Rebel transit through the region particularly difficult.

The alliance between the Rebellion and Dac - the Mon Calamari homeworld - provided the Alliance with its first significant territory; not just the Dac system itself, but the entire Calamari Sector. Located at the very outer edge of the Outer Rim Territories, the sector is so far removed from the Imperials' area of concern that it has, for now at least, been left in Rebel hands: partly as a means for the Empire to avoid a return to an insidious, nomadic, and hard-to-find Rebellion. The planets of Togoria and Generis in the Atravis Sector were also among the worlds that openly declared their support for the Alliance.

The wake of the Battle of Endor emboldened the Rebel Alliance, and led efforts to be made to gain control of various sympathetic worlds. Though attempts to liberate Kashyyyk have so far been fruitless, the planet of Sullust in the Brema Sector was successfully freed and fortified by the Alliance in 2 AE. Months later, the Rebels succeeded in forcing an Imperial retreat from the Bothan Sector, liberating key worlds like Bothawui, Kothlis, and Mandell.

Secret Bases

The Verpine asteroids of Roche were home to the facility where the B-Wing Assault Starfighter was developed, and while Imperial forces drove the Rebels out of the asteroid field years ago, Dorn Force has recently been secretly operating from the system.

Given the fairly minimal Imperial presence in the Anoat Sector, the Rebel Alliance is able to maintain a presence in some form on several worlds, including Polmanar and Darlyn Boda.

A secret construction facility has recently been established on Mustafar; orbital facilities allow for the refit, refurbishment, and repair of existing vessels, while facilities on the surface are being established to allow for the construction of starfighters, transports, and escorts.
