The son of a First World War veteran, Wayland Godfrey went on to have an extensive career himself, serving in the British Army during the Second World War and the Cold War that followed, ultimately achieving the rank of Brigadier.
As a young officer, Godfrey participated in Operation Pelius as a member of Special Wing; years later, he was appointed the commander of Operation Damocles. Both groups were significant parts of the history of mutants in Great Britain.
Second World War
|
Born into a family with an extensive history of military service, Wayland was expected to join the Army himself. When the Second World War broke out however, he was declared medically unfit for military service, and spent the early years of the War working in a factory that manufactured arms and ammunition; something that earned him a great deal of ridicule from his elder brother Marshall.
Everything changed when Wayland's mutant gene first manifested, quite literally transforming him into a supersoldier. He was recruited by Special Wing, a unit nested within the RAF Regiment that made use of soldiers from all corners of the Allied military who had "supernatural or paranormal abilities". Though his service with Special Wing unfortunately saw him fighting alongside his brother, it also saw him in action alongside the likes of the British Commandos and the Special Air Service.
Special Wing continued to operate even after the end of the War, ultimately being disbanded in 1947. Wayland had hoped to retire and marry Aster Ouranov, but she ultimately broke off their engagement in favour of marrying Marshall. Heartbroken, Wayland decided to dedicate himself completely to his military career.

Cold War
|
When Operation Damocles began during the Cold War, the military approached Wayland - one of the few members of Special Wing still in service - and offered him command. He accepted, and spent the rest of his active life overseeing Britain's efforts to combat mutant insurgents from the Soviet Union, and dissident mutants from Europe and from Britain itself. The assignment saw him working closely with Commander Nathan Godfrey from Naval Intelligence: Wayland's uncle who, by virtue of his mutation, looked younger at the time than Wayland did.
While serving as Damocles' commander, Wayland met - and conducted a brief affair with - Elicia Cleine, the wife of the Swiss Ambassador. Unbeknownst to him, that affair bore a daughter - Clarity - whom Wayland never knew of nor met.
Colonel - later Brigadier - Godfrey commanded Operation Damocles for the entirity of it's existance, eventually retiring in 1996 when the operation was officially terminated by the Ministry of Defense.

Retirement
|
Brigadier Godfrey moved directly to a retirement home after leaving the military, relying on his comfortable pension to pay for his care during his ailing years. Despite being a literal man of steel, Wayland's body had grown increasingly frail over his later life, to the point where transformation into his Metal Form was impossible: leaving him trapped in the body of a weak old man.
During the final weeks of his life, he was visited by the daughter he never knew he had; sadly it was too little too late, both of them too disillusioned with the concept of family to forge any kind of meaningful bond. He was visited shortly after by Heidrich Alderman, who comitted an act of what he considered euthanasia; medical examiners ruled that Wayland's death had been caused by a heart attack.

Powers / Abilities
|
Metal Form - While Wayland does not naturally have any superhuman characteristics, he is able to transform himself into a metallic creature which does. In his Metal Form he is considerably larger, both in terms of height and musculature; he also posesses increased strength, and is as resistant to physical damage as one would expect a metal man to be. It is unclear whether it is only his skin or his entire body that transforms: during the period when he was actively using his abilities, the technology to answer that question had not yet been invented.
