Commonly known as "The Fighting Fifth", the 5th Division of Alliance SpecForce is considered - by themselves at least - to be something of an elite within SpecForce. While other units are generally assigned to a specific Fleet or Sector Force - often with a central headquarters on one of the Alliance-controlled worlds - the Fighting Fifth is attatched directly to SpecForce Command, and ignores geographical boundaries, being deployed on missions anywhere, at any time.

History

Though officially formed after the Rebel Alliance had already been established, the Fighting Fifth has its origins in the Corellian Resistance that existed long before. Designating the unit "Fifth" was a deliberate reference on the part of Crix Madine to the Five Worlds of the Corellian system, and as such the unit has always had a certain association with and appeal to Corellians - it was even deployed as part of the Corellian Sector Force for a time.

Though originally commanded by a Corellian, shortly after the Battle of Hoth command passed to a Bothan: a Lieutenant General named Torrsk Oruo'rel. Many of the more hardline Corellians in the unit had a problem with such a blatantly non-Corellian individual taking charge, but Crix Madine stood by his choice. Oruo'rel commanded the unit with distinction, and through his leadership actually inspired the Fifth to expand on its reputation.

Following the Battle of Endor, much of the Alliance leadership was killed, including General Madine and much of the senior SpecForce staff. Of those who remained, Oruo'rel was one of the most prominant, and was ultimately promoted to become Madine's replacement. Rather than saccrifice his leadership of the Fifth however, he had the unit declared the new Command Division for SpecForce, ultimately relocating the Division to Bothawui following it's relocation.

Because of its association and familiarity with the SpecForce leadership, the Fighting Fifth is regularly called upon to engage in missions of the utmost importance, propogating the belief amongst its members that they are thought of as an elite among the elite.

Leadership

Despite his responsibilities as Supreme Commander of the Alliance SpecForces, General Torrsk Oruo'rel still insists on personally overseeing the operations of the Fighting Fifth. He does however place a huge amount of faith in the abilities and capabilities of his Regiment commanders, and provides them with much more freedom and autonomy than they might enjoy in other units.

Notable commanders of 5th Division Regiments include:

Regiments

As with all SpecForce Divisions, the Fighting Fifth is divided into the standard seven Regiments.

  • 1st Regiment, Space Operations - referred to unofficially as "SpaceOps" or "Marines", the SpecForce Troopers of 1st Regiment specialise in combat in zero- and low-gravity environments, as well as in boarding operations and close-quarters combat aboard spacecraft. Taskforce Company Wesk, as well as Xesh, Yirt, and Enth all actively serve with the Regiment.
  • 2nd Regiment, Pathfinders - the Pathfinders were Drop Troopers, deployed into enemy territory to provide reconnaissance, establish beachheads, and hold targetted positions until reinforcements could arrive. They were trained in a variety of additional skills, including wilderness combat, survival, and ambush tactics.
  • 3rd Regiment, Urban Combat Specialists - known as the "Urban Guerrillas", these SpecForce Troopers are trained for combat within urban areas; and in covert, ambush tactics that would allow them to combat entire Imperial garrisons with relatively few soldiers.
  • 4th Regiment, Wilderness Operations - known as "Rangers", or sometimes as "WildOps" (a portmandeau of "Wilderness Operations"), these SpecForce Troopers are trained for combat in extreme conditions, learning to use their environment to their advantage in combat. Companies specialise for certain terrain types, such as the cold conditions on Hoth, the forest environment of Endor, desert planets like Tatooine, or aquatic worlds like Mon Calamari or Kamino.
  • 5th Regiment, Infiltrators - the Infiltrators are widely considered to be among the elite of Alliance forces, trained for covert insertion into Imperial facilities for sabotage and espionage, as well as rescues, abductions, and assassinations. Their missions were often classified as Black Ops: beyond merely covert, and with little hope of back-up or rescue should the mission go wrong. Taskforce Unit Cresh was part of this regiment prior to its destruction, but has been retained - empty - as a memorial to those who died. It's only surviving member, Charlotte Tur'enne, serves with Dorn Force.
  • 6th Regiment, Heavy Weapons Specialists - the Heavy Weapons Specialists are trained to provide support to units from other SpecForce Regiments. Gunners often specialise in heavy blaster weapons, or vehicle-mounted weaponry, whereas Vanguards were mobile troops equipped with missile launchers and similar equipment for an anti-mechanized role. They were also trained with grenades and explosives, acting as Demolitions specialists; in this latter role in particular, Heavy Weapons Specialists often found themselves embedded with other Regiments.
  • 7th Regiment, Technicians - while Heavy Weapons Specialists provide combat support, Technicians provide almost every other kind of concievable support to operational units. They serve as mechanics and technicians; pilots and drivers; sensor and communications operators; interrogators; quartermasters; procurement specialists; and all manner of other important roles.
