Checkmate is a secret organisation established by government agents and former members of the Justice Society of America to covertly protect the nation from villains and danger without drawing the attention that Golden Age heroics did. Over the decades however the organisation has become increasingly sordid, and is now a morally dubious cabal willing to protect the United States by any and all means necessary.

History

Hierarchy

Black Castle

The headquarters of Checkmate is codenamed Black Castle, and is located in Belle Reve, Louisiana. It provides a holding facility for individuals deemed too dangerous to be left in the custody of the DEO and other law enforcement agencies, as well as those deemed "strategically valuable" - such as the members of the Suicide Squad.

ARGUS

The Advanced Research Group, United Support is ostensibly a branch of the Department of Energy, but in reality is one of the public fronts for Checkmate. ARGUS has a mandate to police and regulate advanced technologies - particularly those of extraterrestrial or anachronistic origin - many of which find their way into the hands of Checkmate as part of it's covert research projects. The ARGUS budget also contributes to Checkmate, via government contracts provided to Queen Consolidated.

The ARGUS Director is codenamed Mockingbird within her agency, but Checkmate identifies her as the Black Queen.

Queen Consolidated

A multinational corporation, Queen Consolidated is controlled in it's entirety by Checkmate, and is used to finance and perform Checkmate's covert research and development. Over the last decade, Queen Consolidated has acquired various companies owned by villains and former vigilantes, acquiring their patents and research materials. The public side of Queen Consolidated develops high-end consumer electronics, providing funds for it's secret projects. QC's main focus is on improving the effectiveness of Checkmate's field operatives through technology and biomedical enhancement.

The President of Queen Consolidated, William Glenmorgan, is a senior member of Checkmate with the codename White Queen. The CEO, Isabel Rochev, is codenamed Red Queen.

Terminology

Operatives

Checkmate's field operatives fall into three categories:

• Special Agents are represented by a Knight (♘) chess piece. Some lead missions and teams or command field outposts, while others are deployed as elite lone operatives.
• Agents are represented by a Rook (♖) chess piece. They are either junior field agents, or specialists working at Checkmate facilities.
• Operatives are represented by a (♙) Pawn chess piece. This includes support staff at Checkmate facilities, but also informants, and operatives/assets within other agencies.

All Checkmate operatives are numbered for identification, and operational anonymity. Checkmate's lead field agent is Agent Zero, a position currently held by Jay Garrick. Colour also plays a part in designating the role of a Checkmate operative. Typically they are represented as white, with black being used to denote operatives on special assignments or in covert units: for example, a Black Pawn might represent captive criminals working with the Suicide Squad, while a Black Knight might represent a Special Agent assigned to lead the squad.
