"As dangerous as what we don't know are the things we 'know' that aren't so."
―Unofficial motto

A paramilitary force that existed since the earliest days of the Rebel Alliance, Alliance Intelligence filled an important role, not only in conducting espionage on behalf of the Alliance, but also in guarding against it.

The operations of Alliance Intelligence range from the analysis of covert surveilance and reconnaissance to more pervasive efforts towards information gathering, such as interrogation and direct espionage. Operatives are also trained to perform a variety of clandestine operations on behalf of Intelligence; in this regard there is a certain degree of overlap with Alliance SpecOps, but Intelligence Agents are renowned for adopting a more "subtle" approach, achieving their ends by more covert and less haphazard means than their counterparts.

Since the liberation of Bothawui, the Bothan Spynet has been incorporated as a core component of the Alliance Intelligence infrastructure.

History

Pending.

Leadership

Originally, Alliance Intelligence was a fully military organization, and as such was led by a General - an officer with a purely military background - who served as the Chief of Intelligence. With so many of the ranking members of the Rebellion killed during the Battle of Endor however, many of the senior positions within Intelligence were filled with civilians and with former agents; currently, the Chief of Intelligence holds the non-military rank of Director.

The agency is divided into numerous branches, which are led by a Subdirector. These individuals answer and report to the Chief of Intelligence, though given the nature of their roles they are often regarded as having a reasonable degree of autonomy to act within their respective jurisdictions.

Additional personnel referred to interchangeably as Agent or Operative. There is little distinction or graduation amongst those ranks, with superiority generally being a factor of skill, experience, and mission perameters. There are however some particularly veteran members of the organisation who are classified as Senior Operatives, and who generally lead particular teams, task forces, and cells.

Branches

The nature of Alliance Intelligence means that there are multiple facets to its operation, and a considerable degree of overlap between the roles and responsibilities in certain areas, which makes dividing into a comprehensive hierarchy difficult. Instead, the organisation is largely divided into a handful of broad jurisdictional areas, overseen by a small number of Subdirectors who coordinate frequently with each other and the Chief of Intelligence to ensure a united and efficient approach to operations.

  • Analysis - the Analysis branch processes data obtained through various means, to provide detailed intelligence and strategy reports for key areas of the Alliance High Command and government. Specific of Analysis include cryptography and profiling. Analysis aids in the selection and screening for new recruits of Alliance SpecForces.
  • Operations - the Operations branch encompasses numerous agents and operatives who engage in espionage and other clandestine operations on behalf of Alliance Intelligence. Not only does this include the theft of information and specific items, but also operations relating to sabotage, assassination, and more general covert military tasks. Agents of the Operations branch occasionally cooperate with members of SpecForce.
  • Fleet Intelligence - the Fleet Intelligence branch facilitates the interaction between Alliance Intelligence and the Alliance Fleet. It converts data from the Analysis branch into tactical briefings for Fleet personnel, and also advises on strategic planning and deployment. Operatives from Fleet Intelligence review all mission and after-action reports, and also supervise and classified and top secret projects and missions engaged by Fleet personnel.
  • Counter Intelligence - the Counter Intelligence branch performs a similar role to the Imperial Security Bureau, engaging in numerous operations to detect and prevent espionage against the Rebel Alliance. Interrogations are a key part of the Counter Intelligence role, and because of that specialism they are occasionally employed as an ad hoc internal affairs analogue.
  • Bothan Spynet - established by the Bothan government three centuries ago, the Bothan Spynet is the most comprehensive network of intelligence gathering in the galaxy. It consists of thousands of spies, informants, data collection droids, and sliced computer systems, all feeding information back into a central infrastructure. The Intergalactic Trade Mission, a front for the Bothan Spynet, now acts as the Headquarters for both Alliance Intelligence and SpecForce.
