- "The truth can be a powerful ally. And, I hope, so can I."
- ―Calleh to Blind Molly
Calleh Ben-Sudr Al-Fard is a Warrior-Scholar of the Third Ring of the Arcane College of Ankaarizad, the foremost school of magic arts in the kingdom of Ankaa. As Ankaa and its people are all-but-legend in the realm of Dalriada, his lineage and allegiances remain a mystery. He has enlisted the aid of the Dalriadan seer Blind Molly in his quest to discover the cause for the waning of magic in the world. Calleh's primary magical affinity is fire.
The Ankaaric Arcane Colleges are dedicated to a holistic education addressing the body, mind, and soul of their students. As such, Calleh is well-versed in such diverse disciplines as literature, history, mathematical sciences, astronomy, zoology, cultural studies, survival skills, horsemanship, and martial arts as well as arcane lore, theoretical and practical magic, demonology, and religion. His ascension to the Third Ring and confirmation as a Warrior-Scholar are testaments to his keen talents and tireless dedication to his studies.
However, his vast knowledge base sometimes fails to disguise a certain naiveté concerning the world at large. With very little planning and without the consent of his mentors, he set out from Ankaarizad to track the flow of the Etherium in hopes of finding the source of the magical disturbances afflicting his homeland. In the course of his quest, he has attracted the attention of numerous dark creatures which now, in turn, track him. He unwittingly led two shadow-spirits into the capital city of Bai-Ulgan, leading to the death of at least one palace guard and forcing him to beat a hasty retreat from the city along with Molly and Cailean MacGabhann.
Kuhaylah
Kuhaylah is a Malhallan mare, a variety of horse bred on the fertile plains of Ankaa which is known for its slight build, its independent spirit, and its unparalleled speed. More specifically, she is an extremely rare bloody-shouldered specimen, characterized by the flecks of reddish fur on her shoulders and flanks. This coloration is prized above all others, making her worth a king's ransom among the Ankaarim.
Kuhaylah, whose name means "one who drinks the wind," has never been kept by any owner for long. She detests being harnessed or restrained and will tolerate a saddle only in extreme circumstances. By some yet-unrevealed arrangement, she has allied herself with Calleh and has carried him for most of his journey from Ankaa to Dalriada. She is by no means "his" horse, and she does not mind reminding him that she will take his directions as suggestions, not commands. Calleh has learned to treat her with the respect that is due her royal blood.
