The Venator Class Star Destroyer, also known as the Republic Attack Cruiser or the Imperial Attack Cruiser, Is a medium warship designed for multi-role deployment. Its massive hanger capacity often tasks these small Star Destroyers to carrier duty. Many of these vessels have found their way into independent, pirate and rebel hands, creating a problem for Imperial patrol ships in the outer rim.

Design
The Venator was one of the largest capital ships capable of atmospheric operations, landing on planets to deploy troops and vehicles. Despite possessing powerful weaponry and being on par with the Victory Class Star Destroyers, the Venator class was designed with an additional starfighter carrier role in mind. Its hangars were far larger than those on other Star Destroyers like the Victory-class and later models like the Imperator/Imperial-class. Modern Fighter wings differ from ship to ship. Most Venators used by the Imperials carried two wings of TIE series fighters, and one wing of TIE bombers. Most Alliance versions carried 72 Fighters and a variable numbers of assault craft and freighters.
The Main weapons of the Venator are the eight DBY-827 Double heavy turbolaser turrets. These weapons had selectable power intensity settings. They included fast-tracking mode for short ranged rapid targeting fire capable of targeting and firing on a target in less than three seconds. Long targeting mode can be selected for targeting vessels over two hundrid kilometers. Almost all power from the Venators reactor can be diverted to these weapons for high power mode. This mode was often used to vaporize targets. Continuous mode uses a low power setting to provide a continuous fire flak-like pattern. This mode could sustain fire for long periods of time before overheating. Two Double Turbolaser cannons and fifty two laser cannons offered defensive protection against smaller corvettes and fighters. Rounding out the multi-role weapons configuration four heavy torpedo tubes gave the Venator planetary bombardment capabilities
History
The Venator-class was born from the success of the Acclamator-class assault ship and was designed by Lira Blissex as a versatile multi-role Te warship. Venator-class Star Destroyers were deployed in many battles during the Clone Wars. These warships were fast enough to pursue blockade runners, while also being large enough to lead independent operations. They could be used to land troops on planetary surfaces, and serve as escorts for the larger battleships. Their Main role was as mainline cruisers and starfighter carriers.
After the Clone wars a few remianed in Imperial service. Others were sold to planetary defense fleets and large corporate fleets. Most of these vessels were abandoned and left to drift in deep space. Many fell into the hands of the Hutt Cartel's, Mandalorian, Zahn Consortium , and other large pirate organizations. Some came into alliance possession and act as carriers and assault vessels.
