Vega during his time at the Corulag Academy

Deployed on a long-term mission to the ice-world of Hoth, Vega's garrison found themselves stranded and without supplies, cut off by a Rebel ambush. Trapped inside a frozen cave, Van-Derveld found himself driven to distraction. In desperate need of sustenance, he resorted to killing one of his team-mates. Appauled by his behaviour, the others turned on him - but found themselves overpowered, all falling to his unusual strength. It was the Force, fuelled by his anger, that had allowed him to dispatch his attackers so easily.

Though he had done some research into the Force whilst on Corulag, he had never seriously considered the possiblity of studying it, in spite of the fact that it was a fairly well-substantiated rumour that many Imperials did. With the death of the Emperor, however, there seemed little reason why he should not delve more deeply into the hidden power. As a consequence of his unbridled desire, his body has already begun to show the signs of decay that the Dark Side can cause - his skin is pale and riddled with blue veins and his eyes are lifeless. Due to an injury, he has also had to have a synthesized voice-box installed, giving his voice an emotionless, metallic tone - furthering his inhuman appearance.

Vega Van-Derveld was (according to Lilaena De'Ville) 'the most thoroughly irreverent bastard on the boards' and (as remarked by Darth Snack) a 'pompous rat egotistical maniac who thinks he's above everyone else'. The keystones of Vega's character were his arrogance, fueled by pride and vanity, and his lust for control over any and everything. Vega personality was conflicted and often his actions seemed chaotic and without any aim besides causing destruction or indulging his rampant hedonism. Paradoxically, the character was also viewed as charismatic and gained a reputation (whilst at The Sith Empire) as something of a ladies' man - a fact which, in part, lead to the seemingly endless expansion of the Van-Derveld family.

The character began as a member of The Sith Empire, where he rose to the rank of Sith Lord under the tutelage of Sith Master Dara Shadowtide. Here he married Gitane Blesse and fathered Darius Van-Derveld (who murdered his own mother) and Galatea Van-Derveld (who fled the Empire, fearing she would have the same fate as her mother). He later joined The Black Hand, where he was trained by Evil Hobgoblin, Sorsha Kasajian and Dalethria Mal Pannis. After the dissolution of The Black Hand, Vega became a member of The Sith Order, though it was clear that he still longed to be part of the collective of powerful Force-users that had formed The Black Hand.

For a brief time, largely due to the influence of his wife Daiquiri Van-Derveld, Vega 'retired' from the world. To do this, Vega faked his own death, and assumed the identity of a man named Jacob Nives. Much to the surprise of those close to the Van-Dervelds, Daiquiri hired Nives as a gardener not long after Vega's death, and was suspected to be engaging in an affair with him. The truth was eventually revealed, with 'Nives' confiding in Darth HERA and Silus Xilarian. For all he had tried to set aside his life as a Darksider for the good of his family, Vega simply could not - he was a merciless killer through and through, and no woman could change that.

Extended History

Vega Van-Derveld was born on Figaro Favoura VII, a moon of the planet Figaro Favoura. The second son of Diego Van-Derveld and Virginie Argent, Vega was favoured over his elder brother Mort, who had been born with severe mental defects and was thus kept at all times in seclusion. In spite of being his fathers favourite child, Vega was raised largely by his great uncle Ziek, as Diego himself spent much time away on business. Ziek, and the other Elders of the family, taught the young Vega many skills - from swordplay to business management. The martial arts were one area which he particularly excelled in and would go on to develop throughout his later life.

When Vega was not being groomed by the Elders, he spent his time travelling with Diego - a businessman with contacts reaching across all corners of the galaxy. One place that the family often visited was Tatooine, the birthplace of Vega's younger brother Ket Van-Derveld. Diego's family also travelled frequently to Karfeddion, another dusty and unforgiving planet. It was here that Diego abandoned his wife and son. Even in adulthood, Vega never came to know the reason for this rejection. Though only in his early teens, Vega was burdened with his mothers remorse and depression. As a consequence of this he turned to fighting as a way of releasing his own anger. By his twentieth birthday Vega had become a prominent player in the local cage-fighting scene, bringing in the money that his mother was no longer strong enough to earn. The stronger he grew, however, the more he wanted tougher challenges.

One evening at the monthly combat contest Vega overheard a conversation between two men talking about The Sith Empire and what it could offer to talented young fighters like those on Karfeddion. Jumping on the chance to leave what he viewed as a backwater drenhole, Vega left for Munto Codru as soon as possible - abandoning his mother, breaking her heart and condemning her to an early death. Feeling no remorse for his actions, Vega was completely fascinated by the idea of the Sith and the new avenues that they opened to him. After being welcomed to the Empire by the Sith Ayanami Rai, Vega chose Dara Shadowtide as his 'Master' - and would continue to train under the Sith Mistress for many subsequent years.

Vega's training progressed quickly. Hungry for praise and approval, he roamed the known haunts of Jedi, drawing lightsiders into the open so that he might defeat them and claim their lightsaber as a trophy for his Master. It wasn't long before Vega began to train apprentices of his own - the first of which being Gitane Blesse, who he would later marry. The camaraderie of the Empire was one thing that particularly appealed to Vega, who formed strong friendships with many of his fellow Sith. Some, such Dyne Darkforce and Eve Siren, he came to think of as family.
