The Mandalorians or Mando'ade are a warrior culture found on Mandalore and neighbouring worlds. Traditionally an elective monarchy built on a system of clans that began several thousand years ago, from 738 BBY the New Mandalorians took power, ushering in an era of peace, democracy and neutrality that lasted until the Clone Wars.
In 10 ABY, the Imperial occupation was ended by Mandalore the Liberator, who has begun to lead efforts to rebuild their planet, society, and culture.

Government
Mandalore currently has a bipartite government, mediated by Mandalore the Liberator. The Aliit'tsad consists of representatives of the True Mandalorian clans who ratified his installation as Mand'alor; the Ruling Council represents the New Mandalorians and general population who choose not to be subject to the Resol'nare or the Superhero Codex, led by the Al'alor. The bulk of Mandalore's military is independent of both parties, and is led by the Akaan'alor; though both the True Mandalorians and New Mandalorians have their own militias.
Mand'alor
In antiquity, Mandalore the First conquered Manda'yaim and wiped out the Mythosaur population. His successors continued to use the title Mand'alor, which translates simply as "Mandalorian leader". Early Mandalores were the chieftains of warbands like the Mandalorian Crusaders and Mandalorian Neo-Crusaders; in later centuries, Mand'alor became the nominated "high chieftain" of the warrior clans, and was both a military and political leader; but consistently, obedience and loyalty to Mandalore was one of the Resol'nare fundamentals of Mandalorian society.
After the rise of the New Mandalorians, unofficial "secret" Mandalores were selected by the True Mandalorians and the Death Watch; after the civil war, Satine Kryze was elected the first and only New Mandalorian Mand'alor, though she chose to refer to herself as Duchess. It wasn't until Mandalore the Liberator brought an end to the Imperial Occupation that a "true" Mandalore held the throne of Mandalore, for the first time in nearly 750 years.

To administer effectively and without unnecessary amounts of political friction between rival philosophies, Mandalore the Liberator established a bipartite government - a Ruling Council of New Mandalorians, and an Aliit'tsad of True Mandalorians - with the bulk of Mandalore's military left independent of both. While Mand'alor met with his Ruling Council in the traditional capital of Keldabe, Aliit'tsad assemblies were held in Sundari - on "neutral ground".
Mandalore the Liberator regards himself as a symbol as well, wearing and carrying various reminders of the Mandalorians' past mistakes so they will not be forgotten or repeated.

Mandalorian Aliite
The True Mandalorians who follow the Supercommando Codex organise themselves into the Aliite: usually translated into Basic as "Clans". Similar to noble houses on other worlds, most aliit are semi-autonomous family groups who own land on the worlds in Mandalorian Space; though usually not Mandalore itself, due to the exile of the True Mandalorians after the civil war. Some Clans are built around a particular bloodline, while others expand and survive through adoption, particularly adoption of offworlders who chose to adopt Mandalorian ways: as the saying goes, Aliit ori'shya tal'din - family doesn't end with blood. Some clans abandoned the Resol'nare and survive as wealthy families amongst the New Mandalorians.

Clans are led by an Aliit'alor - the "clan chieftain" or "clan commander", depending on the translator's preference. Each aliit has it's own sigil or aliik, which is worn on the armour of all it's members. The aliit is expect to provide for the education, accommodation, and wellbeing of it's members, and are granted certain special privileges and freedoms to practice their beliefs; in return they are expected to adhere strictly to the Resol'nare and the Supercommando Codex, and risk excommunication from their clan - and from Manda'yaim - if they fail to do so.
Aliit'tsad
A High Council of the Aliite, drawn from the chieftains and commanders of the major Clans. They meet with the Mand'alor in the Sundari Royal Palace to mediate disputes and negotiate as equals on "neutral ground". It is usually the Aliit'alor who represents the Clan at each summit, though in some instances a trusted son or daughter of the Clan is sent in their stead.

Mandalorian Ruling Council
Under the New Mandalorians, the Ruling Council was a democratically selected committee of ministers who advised the Duchess of Mandalore, during audiences in the Sundari Royal Palace. They presided over Mandalore directly, and administered the other worlds of Mandalorian Space through planetary Governors; it was represented in the Galactic Senate.
During the Imperial Occupation, the Ruling Council was replaced by a Regional Governor. When Mandalore the Liberator came to power, he established a bipartite government; the Aliit'tsad representing the True Mandalorians, and a new Ruling Council to represent the New Mandalorians. To emphasise the cooperation and power-sharing of these previously opposed political factions, Mandalore moved the Ruling Council to the traditional capital Keldabe; while the Aliit'tsad would hold their assemblies "on neutral ground" in the Sundari Royal Palace.
- Falcris Ordo - Prime Minister
- Minister of Law
- Minister of Labor
- Minister of Finance
- Minister of the Interior
The Minister of Law is responsible for mediating legal disputes based on the differences between the New Mandalorian and True Mandalorian legal systems, particularly those related to land rights, inheritance, duels and other "lawful killings", and a host of other complicated judicial issues. The Minister of Labor supervises the evolution of the Mandalorians from a slave population to a paid population, working with labor unions and workers' guilds to ensure fair wages and safe conditions, and to ensure that the labor force is distributed well enough to ensure that Mandalore has sufficient food and resources to be self-sufficient. The Minister of Finance manages the treasury and the economy, and is responsible for ensuring that the Mandalorians are both paid and taxed fairly, as well as supervising the commodities market, and trade. The Minister of the Interior ensures the welfare of the New Mandalorian population through education, healthcare, security, transportation, and such; for True Mandalorians, their Aliit is responsible for these provisions.
Bounty Hunters' Guild
During the Uprising against the Imperial Occupation, many of the Mandalorians who rallied to Mandalore the Liberator were members of the Bounty Hunters' Guild; and many brought their allies and associates to aid Mand'alor as well. As thanks for their aid, Mand'alor offered Concordia - Mandalore's moon - as a sanctuary for the Guild: somewhere outside of Imperial, Alliance, and Hutt Space.
Because of the nature of their work, the beroya'e are granted certain legal concessions to carry weapons, fly combat vessels through Mandalorian Space and land them at Mandalorian spaceports, and to perform their work in the region. They were also given permission to make purchases from Mandalorian gorane and MandalMotors: something limited only to Mando'ade under Mandalore the Liberator. To resolve any issues that might arise, the Guild appointed Mace Riko to be the Alor'ad ("captain") on Concordia, accountable to the Ruling Council and responsible for the bounty hunters' conduct.

Resol'nare |
---|
Rather than a race, the Mando'ade are a set of cultural beliefs, summed up as the Resol'nare or "Six Actions". These beliefs were fundamental, and held religious significance: those who kept to the Resol'nare would pass into Manda, the collective spiritual soul of the Mando'ade upon death; those who did not were "faithless", and damned.
Abandoning the Resol'nare was the biggest point of contention between the New Mandalorians and the True Mandalorians, more so than their political allegiances and ideologies. |
Supercommando |
---|
Anyone can be a verde ("warrior"): to a Mandalorian, that is anyone over the age of thirteen who lives by the Resol'nare.
To be a ramikad - a raider, crusader, or commando - one has to be the kind of elite, mobile soldier that made the Mandalorian Crusaders infamous seven thousand years ago. As with the rest of the galaxy, the term "commando" implies skill and discipline; to be a Crusader, a Mandalorian needed to be better than the mere verde they were to fight against. The concept of the Ori'ramikad or "supercommando" took that concept further: it was about not only being a more skilled soldier, but also being a better and more honourable soldier, keeping to a code of ethics and protocol beyond the mere basics that the Crusaders had already established with the Resol'nare and the Canons of Honor. The concept originated with Mandalore the Preserver and the Mandalorians on Dxun and Onderon, but did not gain much attention within the rest of Mandalorian culture until Jaster Mereel of the True Mandalorians composed his Supercommando Codex, which provided hundreds of rules and guidelines on how to be that kind of better soldier. In order to be a True Mandalorian, and to earn the rights and privileges to be considered part of the Aliite, one was legally bound to obey the regulations of the Supercommando Codex. |

Cuy'val Dar |

After being selected as the clone template for the Grand Army of the Republic, Jango Fett worked with the Kaminoans to provide for the clone troopers' training. Fett recruited 75 Mandalorians, and 25 other mercenaries to become the Cuy'val Dar - "Those who no longer exist", a group of mostly presumed-dead soldiers who would serve as instructors, training the Republic's future Commandos and ARC Troopers in absolute secrecy. When the Clone Wars began in 22 BBY their contracts expired and many returned to their lives, though some continued their affiliation with the Republic, as drill instructors for subsequent clone batches.

Language
The language of the Mandalorians is Mando'a. Understanding the language is one of the Resol'nare of Mandalorian society, and thus all True Mandalorians speak it; though many New Mandalorians do not. See Mando'a Terms for more information.
