The Jedi Code
There is no emotion; there is peace. There is no ignorance; there is knowledge. There is no passion; there is serenity. There is no chaos; there is harmony. There is no death; there is the Force.
The Jedi Code outlines the foundation of all Jedi belief. Five lines long, this concise series of statements holds the breadth and depth of Jedi mindset and behavior.
"There is no emotion; there is peace."
Jedi do not believe in expressing strong emotions. Emotions such as fear, anger, and even love can cause people to make bad decisions if those emotions are allowed to influence decisions and judgements. Jedi learn to control their emotions and let them go, thereby achieving an emotional tranquility that allows them to make logical, unbiased decisions.
"There is no ignorance; there is knowledge."
Jedi are not only diplomats and warriors, but also scholars. Jedi typically do not act without first learning all they can about a situation. The absence of data or incomplete data will often prompt a Jedi to research or ask for as many accounts as possible. Jedi are often misconceived as cautious or apathetic by those outside the Order, when they are usually only being patient and trying to learn more. Knowledge is a great a tool to the Jedi as a lightsaber or the Force--especially when a key bit of information can avoid conflict or loss of life.
"There is no passion; there is serenity."
Jedi avoid attachments to things and people. In the past Jedi have not married or cultivated romance, stating that becoming so dependent on another being stirs up strong emotions and clouds judgement. Attachments of this nature can also cause Jedi to act--or not act--in an impartial and unbiased manner. Other attachments such as love of food, money, or luxury are also frowned upon because it leaves a Jedi open to greed and corruption. When a Jedi can learn to live without attachments and strong desires, they find peace between themselves and the galaxy in which they act.
"There is no chaos; there is harmony."
Nothing is random. There are no such things as coincidences. What may seem disorganized or disorderly in the events of the galaxy can demonstrate a pattern when looked at from the proper view. A Jedi who is emotionally centered and shows patience and knowledge can winnow out the patterns and continuities of events in the greater galaxy and create peace and balance in the galaxy.
Some Jedi also see "random" and "coincidental" events as the will of the Force itself.
"There is no death; there is the Force."
Jedi believe when people die their spirits or consciousness re-joins the Force. The Force surrounds and penetrates the fabric and being of everything in the universe and because of this, all things are connected. Therefore, when a person dies, though their bodies decompose and fade, they are still present in the Force. This belief is bolstered by the appearance of dead Jedi to those still living as Force Ghosts.
Jedi and the Galaxy
Jedi Goals
Jedi are committed to upholding peace, stability, and balance in the galaxy. When political bodies disagree on an issue, Jedi are sometimes asked to mediate as an unbiased third party. Jedi also come to the aid of other peoples as defenders or liberators. Jedi some times are asked to defend the peace, disrupt slave trade, or act as bodyguards for important political figures.
Jedi may also decide to involve themselves in the affairs of people and organizations in the Galaxy if they believe the actions of one or more parties may upset the balance and peace of the galaxy.
