Known as Hawkman, the adventurer-archaeologist and vigilante Carter Hall is the latest manifestation of Prince Khufu Kha-Tarr: a member of Ancient Egyptian royalty, who was killed and trapped in an endless cycle of reincarnation by the priest Hath-Set. Over his many lives he has acted as a vigilante numerous times, and while disparate and period-specific, entities such as the Silent Knight and Nighthawk are all bound by the same hawk motief.

As Hawkman he first became active in Midway City, halting a break-in at the local museum. In the process he used various artifacts from the museum displays, and drew a great deal of inspiration from that in the construction of the Hawkman persona. Notable for his use of ancient weapons and armour, Hawkman also posesses a set of magical (or possibly technological) wings, which grant him the ability to fly. Beyond that - and his reincarnation - he is not believed to posess any supernatural or metahuman abilities.

Originally focussing on petty crime in the Midway City area, Hawkman was ultimately drafted into a vigilante group known as the Justice Society of America. Based in Gotham City, they worked - with unofficial permission from the President of the United States - to thwart the un-American activities of various supervillains and Communist insurgents throughout the seventies. At one stage Hawkman was even the chairman of the group, and was joined by Hawkgirl - the reincarnation of Prince Khufu's béloved Chay-Ara, who Carter Hall eventually married.

Hawkman's time with the Justice Society came to an end however thanks to the efforts of Vandal Savage, a long-time nemesis of the group. He engineered a coordinated plan that involved numerous supervillains with the express purpose of bringing down the Society, and he succeeded: claiming the lives of several of it's members, including Hawkgirl.

In the immediate aftermath Hawkman went rogue, but was unable to track down and take revenge upon Savage. Eventually giving up, he vowed to hang up his wings and await death, so that he could be reborn and meet Chay-Ara again in the next life, focussing instead on raising Dinah Hall: the daughter of fellow Society members Black Canary and Green Arrow, whom he adopted.

However, some of his former comrades had other plans. From the ashes of the Justice Society, the government agency Checkmate was formed, with several of the Society's survivors acting as it's early agents. Splitting his time between his paternal and patriotic duties, he performed numerous missions for the agency over the years. However, now approaching his sixties, he has - for the most part - retired.
