Originally formed as a Z-95 Headhunter unit during the early days of the Rebel Alliance, Valkyrie Squadron was one of the progenator units of the hit-and-fade tactics that came to epitomize Rebel activities. They also participated in several major battles, including flying at Ton-Falk and Kashyyyk; and ultimately became one of the first units selected to fly the new RZ-1 A-Wing Interceptor. During the Battle of Endor, many Valkyries flew as part of Green Squadron.
Following Endor, the Valkyries returned to their operations to disrupt Imperial trade routes, based aboard the Mon Calamari Cruiser Valiant. Their area of operations focused on the Hydian Way, and their activities secured numerous small victories for the Alliance, claiming the Carrack Cruiser Edean and the Strike Cruiser Cryptic Forest as victims, among others.
Some time later, the squadron was outfitted with the new RZ-2 A-Wing Interceptor, and assigned with the Valiant to protect The Wheel - a convoy of survivors from the Jedi Purge. They were initially joined in the endeavour by Rogue Squadron, and later by numerous other squadrons when the Star Destroyer Challenger was assigned to assist. With the bulk of The Wheel's air group assigned to the larger Challenger, Valkyrie Squadron was deployed alone aboard the Valiant, occasionally joined by Rogue Squadron (or other units) as part of scouting and vanguard missions.

Out of Character
The squadron is named in reference to a fighter that appears in the Macross anime, and one that appears in a computer game from the Star Trek franchise. The logo meanwhile is a modified version of a Nightwing logo from DC Comics, chosen for its V-like shape and bird-like stylings.
