Nirax Essamus is an excellent example of a turian military officer. His unit, which patrolled the border between Citadel Space and the Attican Traverse earned many accolades and had one of the lowest encounter to casualty ratio in 500 years. Nirax is by-the-book in everything but application of turian tactics and is perfectly willing to use a Human (race)|human]] or asari derived solution if it suits the situation.
Pirates who encountered Nirax led patrols and units found that the application of overwhelming force wasn't precisely where they thought it was, and uses combined arms more aggressively than conventional turian doctrine.
Outside of his tactical abilities, Nirax is a stick in the mud. He is slightly distrusting of non-turian military units because of their comparative lack of discipline, but admires their flexibility and diversity, and this caries into his interpersonal relations with other species. He is not a very good diplomat and can be uncomfortable in unconventional non-military situations.
Like many other turians, Nirax is aware of his limitations and turned down an offer to be a Specter, as he felt it would do more harm than good.
An Asari commando once remarked that Nirax "is cold, calculating, and ruthlessly efficient ...an absolute hard-ass."
