When the unit was initially established, Dorn Force was temporarily based aboard the Nebulon-B Frigate Intrepid. Following the establishment of the Special Reconnaissance Regiment however, a larger and better equipped facility was required; the Intrepid was subsequently reassigned to Task Force 75.

In selecting a base of operations for the Regiment, Colonel Dalgas wanted somewhere that was central to many of the areas in which the unit was expected to work: in easy reach of the Core and the Outer Rim, and also proximate to several of the Rebellion's allied sectors and safeworlds. Ultimately, the Roche Asteroids - home of the Verpines, and the location where the B-Wing was developed - were selected, for their central location along the Perlemian Trade Route.

Currently, the Regiment "officially" consists of four units:

Formed from the fighters left over when Raptor Squadron converted to the Mark II A-Wing, Talon Squadron was formed from personnel already present aboard the Task Force who had experience of piloting, and could be trained up internally to combat status. This includes the Wildcards commando team. They typically fly the T-65B X-Wing Starfighter.

Taskforce Unit Aurek is a unit of Pathfinders from Dalgas' former Regiment. Taskforce Unit Besh is a unit of SpaceOps Troopers - Marines - seconded from Colonel Regulus Starborn's Regiment; also part of the Fighting Fifth. They specialise in close quarters combat aboard starships and orbital facilities, and in covertly - and overtly - boarding those vessels from space. They provide combat support to Dorn Force in these situations; they are also sometimes deployed for surface combat that takes place in close quarters conditions.

Taskforce Unit Dorn, better known as Dorn Force, is a commando unit composed of members from any and all Regiments within SpecForce. A unit within Division Five of the Alliance SpecForce - the "Fighting Fifth" - the Special Reconnaissance Regiment is a special force that was created to bridge the gap between SpecForce and Alliance SpecOps. The unit provides an infrastructure whereby SpecForce can provide support to Special Operations, and also so that the organisation can conduct such missions on its own, without the reliance on specialist Special Operations Groups. More importantly, it allowed the operations to be conducted entirely under the umbrella of SpecForce, without any complications in jurisdiction and chain-of-command.

The unit was originally formed as a sole team - Taskforce Dorn, aka. "Dorn Force" - as the brainchild of Colonel Sogan Dalgas. While SpecForce did already regularly engage in operations that combined elements from various Regiments, most operations of that nature occurred in isolation. Dalgas saw the potential benefits of a permenant unit of that nature, that would be able to make use of that cooperation and assorted skill set, as well as benefit from small-team tactics, and from the familiarity of having worked with the same individuals on numerous past occasions.

Following the success of Dorn Force's early missions, Alliance Command agreed to support Dalgas in expanding on his idea, adding in the personnel and resources to properly establish the infrastructure for SpecForce Special Operations.
