The infamous B-Wing Assault Fighter - better known as the Blade-Wing Assault Starfighter by its manufacturers - was developed as part of Project Shantipole by then-Commander Ackbar and the Verpine company Slayn & Korpil in the wake of the Mon Calamari liberation, and their membership of the Rebel Alliance.

In the wake of the Battle of Yavin, the Rebellion began a campaign of mounting raids against Imperial convoys to retrieve supplies for the Rebellion and to provoke the Empire into dedicating more resources to escort duties and tax their forces elsewhere. The initial response by the Empire came in the form of the EF76-B Nebulon-B Escort Frigate, a ship well-suited to repelling the Alliance's Starfighter raids. The Rebels found themselves at a disadvantage, needing a craft capable of tackling the threat posed by such escort frigates better than the aging BTL-S3 Y-Wing Starfighter was able.

Developed in the Roche asteroids by by the Verpines under Ackbar's supervision, a craft was developed that could serve as a platform worthy of some Gunboat craft, but agile enough to still fill the role of Starfighter. Standard armaments included an assortment of Lasers, Ion Cannons and warhead weapons, but the Blade-Wing was designed to be modular enough that the weapons could easily be swapped out to fit with different mission profiles, and different pilot preferences. Unfortunately for the development team, the Imperials became aware of the project and made an attempt to capture the craft for their own use, but the prototypes were successful in repelling the Imperial forces and allowing Slayn & Korpil time to evacuate.

Moved along with their infrastructure to the Mon Calamari Shipyards, Slayn & Korpil took the B-Wing to the next stage of development. Early models of the fighter were deployed with units such as Dagger Squadron, and a number of craft participated in the assault against the Death Star over Endor. In the years that followed, B-Wings were commonly deployed to augment squadrons of A-Wings and X-Wings on raiding operations, helping to deal with the threats posed by escort vessels far better than the Rebels had previously been able.

A number of uprated and variant forms of the B-Wing have been developed including the B-Wing/E2 Assault Fighter, which was designed to accomodate a dedicated gunner to manage the ship's weapons systems and allow the pilot to focus more on flying.
