She was found as a baby aboard a wrecked drifting starship at the edge of the [http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/S-K_system S-K System] in the Unknown Regions by a private Chiss traveler and his crew. She was discovered by a Rattataki slave, Kerana, who was sent to investigate whether any threat was on the ship. The woman retrieved the baby and pleaded for her not to be harmed. Her owner agreed to her decision, given the stellar services Kerana had shown to his family over the years. Both mother and adopted daughters were eventually purchased by another Chiss, a politician who found great satisfaction in their actions.

Vala was taught several languages as well as information about relevant topics of concern to the Chiss and especially her owner. As for Kerana, she instructed her in combat techniques, having always served as bodyguard to her different masters.
