Introduction

As part of the post-reset reworking of the forums, a new type of roleplaying was introduced to SWFans - "General Roleplaying". This forum allowed users to roleplay in settings other than the classic Star Wars universe. One of the more popular settings to emerge from this new freedom is The World of Darkness, proposed by Dasquian Belargic who had previously attempted to create a World of Darkness community separate from SWFans. Based on the 2nd Edition of White Wolf's hugely popular roleplaying game of the same name, The World of Darkness (or WoD) gave players the opportunity to create characters of a different kind - Kindred (vampires), Garou (werewolves), Mages, Immortals and many more besides. Though all manner of characters from White Wolf's setting are welcome, thus far the Kindred of “Vampire: the Masquerade” have proved the most popular.

Our World of Darkness stories now have their own forum under the General Roleplaying heading.

Character Types

In the WoD, players have the chance to play as some of the archetypes of horror fiction.

  • Kindred – the vampires of the WoD, their world is full of political intrigue.
  • Garou – the werewolves of the WoD, fighting to keep the planet alive.
  • Mages – the wizards of the WoD, searching for 'ascension' to a higher state of being.
  • Immortals – as seen in “Highlander”.

Players may also take on the role of a Mortal, typically an innocent bystander who is naive to the danger of the world they live in. Ghouls, mortals who have an addiction to vampire vitae which grants them long life and other side benefits, are also available to play. There are also a large number of Changing Breeds – shapeshifters, like the Garou, who can change into anything from ravens (Corax) to gigantic spiders (Ananasi).

Setting

One unique factor of the WoD setting is that it is based - albeit loosely - in reality. The timeline of the WoD world is grounded in the history of our world. For example, the storyline of the SWfans WoD began on New Years Eve 2006. As a consequence of this, players are able to incorporate real-world history in their characters biographies. Given that many characters are immortal and have lived for hundreds of years, this allows players to create vast and rich histories, interweaving the Kindred and Mortal history and culture. One obvious bonus of this setting is that all players will come into the game knowing a large amount about the world on which their characters will live.

There is also a timeline of WoD goings-on (World of Darkness Timeline) which includes important dates for characters and roleplays.
