Salem Ave was an 'intimidating, complicated, unpredictable character'. Originally born of the Baxthrax species, Salem was trained to the rank of Sith Knight by [[Rama Sha]] of [[The Sith Empire]], and later embraced as a vampire of [[The Coven]] by [[Razielle Shadana]]. As well as being a member of The Sith Empire, Salem served time (on numerous occasions) as an Elder of [[The Sith Order]], helped to found [[The Krath]] (with his then master [[Jeseth Cloak]]) and [[The Cabal]], and finally ended up as a member of [[Kuklos Ataxia]]. Viewed by many as something of a nihilist, Salem's opinions on the world and those around him were wholly unique. Loyal to only himself, even those who did find themselves in his favor knew him to be cold and unresponsive, unwilling to show any sign of compassion even to those he 'loved'.

Upon being accepted by the Jedi Council as a youngling of the Order, the boy was first assigned to be trained by Serena Laran but a clash of personalities instead lead to A'na Eldhil accepting Salemescro as her Padawan learner. Following the collapse of the Jedi Order and the Republic, he traveled for a short time with his Master and her younger apprentice, Lilaena De'Ville. As a teenager, Salem slipped free from A'na and decided to explore the Galaxy on his own.
