This type of cruiser could field the typical 36 starfighters, but required less crew and was more "nimble". With armor reduced to the bare essentials, and less offensive weaponry, the ship relied upon its redundant Calamari shielding and a "tightly wound" hyperdrive motivator to evade trouble. To reduce collateral loss, MC-80m's ("M" for "mobile") often operated alone, or with a pair of small, fast escorts (such as Corellian Corvettes or Gunships) that acted as "rovers" — if they became separated in a jump, they would operate under the assumption that they would once again rendezvous at a pre-determined location later. Starfighters were the word on these cruisers, and pilot life was brackishly cavalier. The few MC-80m's that the Alliance possessed operated nearly autonomously – they were relayed a series of possible second-rate objectives, and ordered to "make do and make waste" of Imperial resources. Thirty Turbolaser batteries, ten Ion Cannon Batteries, six heavy missile launchers, and two Tractor Beam Projectors make up the armament of the MC80m. It's hanger could hold up to thirty six star fighters and six blastboats or shuttles.
History
Developed soon after the Battle of Hoth and the last to be designed or converted, the MC-80M represents the Alliance's strategy of "Hit and Fade" tactics, surprise attacks, and quick, efficient withdrawals. Its sacrifice in size and armament is made up for in its agility and durability. The MC-80M often is the first major capital starship present at a combat zone, dispatched at a moment's notice from the fleet. Notably, several of the squadrons that these ships carry have become some of the best, most seasoned veterens in the fleet
