In-Character
The eldest son of the eldest son of General John Montgomery Heller, John Tristan Heller - better known as Tristan to distinguish from his father, John Heller Jr. - never really fit in with the rest of his family. Though his relatives bought in to the upper-class traditions that the family had adopted, Tristan would have preferred to live a normal life, without all the private schools, fancy dinners, and the other pomp and circumstance that he was forced to endure.
A lot of friction existed between Tristan and his father. John Heller Jr - a senior partner in a highly successful law firm - resented Tristan for not abiding by the family traditions, considering his attitude disrespectful to General Heller's memory. Tristan on the other hand resented the level of meddling in his personal life that his father exercised. Their differences reached a peak when Tristan shrugged off the entry into Harvard Law that his father had arranged, instead leaving home to join the military.
Tristan served initially as a driver in the logistics and support branches of the US Army, eventually progressing later in his service to serve as a Helicopter Pilot. His career was cut short however after several incidents of reported insubordination that eventually led to him being discharged. That was the final straw for his father; John Heller effectively disowned his son, cutting him off entirely from any access to the family fortune and leaving him to fend for himself. (A Good Lie is Easier to Believe Than the Truth)
With little to live on, and no skills easily transferable to other careers, Tristan ultimately turned to crime as a means of gaining access to money; he has been tied to a number of petty crimes over the years, but the police have never been able to find enough evidence to make the charges stick. This was fortunate in one instance, when Tristan's lack of control over his mutant abilities lead to the "death" of Captain Untouchable. The Captain fortunately recovered from his burns and the gunshots from the "mercy killing" that Tristan delivered, but he is as yet unaware of that fact; the "murder" weighs heavily on his conscience. (Neither Fire nor Wind)
Continuing his life of crime, Tristan found an unlikely ally in his younger sibling, Monty Heller. Using Monty's technical expertise and Tristan's military training, the two engaged in a raid on a New York City penthouse, complete with high-tech security. (Once You Have Their Money, You Never Give it Back)
Powers
Tristan is mildly pyrokinetic, but has invested very little time in actually developing his abilities. He is able to consciously channel heat into his hands, and with concentration can exert minimal control over flames that are already lit. However, anything beyond that usually comes as an instinctive reaction over which he has little direct control.
Additionally, Tristan is an extremely accurate shot with a pistol, and rarely (if ever) misses. It is unclear whether his accuracy is a mutant ability, or a result of his military training and natural skill.
Timeline
- Neither Fire nor Wind : A 'routine' robbery goes terribly wrong; Tristan's powers act beyond his control and an unfortunate victim is hospitalized.
Out Of Character
Jace has been around on the site since January 2007. He knows all the things, including board lore, random trivia, and really really terrible jokes and puns.
