The MC40a-class Light Star Cruiser is the second generation of the Mon Calamari Light Cruiser. It's major upgrade is in the reconstruction of the Hanger section to accommodate two squadrons of starfighters.
Design
An improved design over the MC40, the MC40a Light Cruiser was developed to provide for a growing Rebel Alliance fleet. The MC40a-class is a three engine vessel that features a large hanger bay on its port side. Like the larger Mon Calamari Cruisers, the MC40a is covered with bumps and blisters houseing Shield generators and weapons batteries. The MC40a-class has a hangar twice the size of its predecessor, capable of carrying up to two starfighter squadrons.
History
The MC40a-class Light Cruiser was a Mon Calamari starship design which was a smaller version of the MC80a cruiser. Like all Mon Calamari starships, each MC40a was unique. A smaller series of Mon Calamari starship, the MC40a contains all the Mon Calamari grace and functionality. Most light cruisers measure 500 meters in lengths, but are similarly equipped with redundant systems. Built by the amphibious Mon Calamari of the planet of the same name, these ships are designed specifically for a crew of Mon Calamari officers and technicians, but they can be refitted at some difficulty to accomodate crews of other species.
