Somewhere else (?): Verse Dawnstrider +1, JediBeldarine +1, Jedah LynchInformation on Dragon*Con:
Dragon*Con (http://www.dragoncon.org/) is a 22 year old convention held in Atlanta, Georgia. In 2009 it will be held on: Sept 4th - 7th.
Memberships (http://www.dragoncon.org/dc_members.php) for the weekend can be bought as of now, with the price increasing as such:
<strike>$60 to 11/14/2008
$70 to 2/13/2009
$80 to 5/15/2009</strike>
$90 to 7/15/2009
$100 thereafter
Group Memberships are discounted $5 per Membership when 10 or more are purchased in advance at one time, in one envelope.

When buying your membership through PayPal, be sure to include the information requested on the membership form - found here: http://dragoncon.org/pdfs/dc09_membership%20form.pdf - in the "additional information" section of your PayPal checkout.
Hotels/Locations (http://www.dragoncon.org/dc_location.php) - <strike> Dragon*Con has deals with five hotels in the area this year (which I assume will be pretty similar next year). Prices listed on the linked page are for 3-4 night blocks and up to an occupancy of 4 per room. You have to mention the convention to recieve the deals.</strike> A little research has lead me to discover that the host hotels are pretty much fully-booked as of now, but so unless you want to take a gamble and hope that reservations are cancelled... it looks like we will be looking elsewhere for accomodation.<BR>

Georgia Aquarium Dragon*Con Deal! (http://www.georgiaaquarium.org/acb/stores/1/newclubfishlink.aspx?Conv_Id=347) - if you'd like to come see the fishies at the worlds largest aquarium, get your ticets for the 8.00pm entrance (already attending: Dasquian, Miranda, Yog, Emelie, Mu, Wyl)I think that's about it for now. I know some people live in the area, and there are probably seedy little motels around there that you could get for cheaper.

Oh, one more thing: Guests of the convention! (http://www.dragoncon.org/dc_guests_list.php) The guest-list in 2008 included people... artists, novelists, actors, etc etc... from all your favorite current and not-so-current shows (Firefly and Farscape :cry).

Also there are many events (http://www.dragoncon.org/dc_events.php) going on through the weekend, a dealers/exibition hall (http://www.dragoncon.org/dc_dealers.php) (you can even BE a dealer [PDF file] (http://www.dragoncon.org/pdfs/dc08_Dealers-Exhibitors_Application.pdf) if you have something to peddle to the masses), and gaming events (http://gaming.dragoncon.net/index.html) (looks like they need to update for 2008 on this section).

Ahh, Gigi Edgley is there :crack

EDIT: Ohh, so is Brad Dourif - aka Grima Wormtongue.

So, were people thinking of staying in hotels? Seems like the 'Quad' rooms would be a good deal. Ideally I'd like to spend some time in the US before the con starts, so if anyone wants to bunk together in the hotel and wouldn't mind putting me up for a couple of days before we hit Atlanta, that would be suuuuper :)

Are we planning on anything outside the convention? I semi-fear that it'll be hard for people to really get together and meet each other if we rely too much on the convention setting.

That being said, I have every intention of heading down there for this. I'll probably be road tripping it from Wisconsin because, well, road trips are awesome.

Lilaena De'Ville
Feb 27th, 2008, 02:31:57 PM
Outside of the convention setting yes - depending on how many people we get together it will probably be difficult to do things like dinner/lunch in a huge group. However! If most of us staying in hotel rooms stay in the same hotel that will make things a lot easier.

Christin - the only thing about people staying at your house is that you guys will have to shuttle back and forth every day for an hour there and back - which will probably suck since gas prices will probably be something like $6 a gallon by next year. :p Just something to keep in mind!

My hubby and I and the baby will be getting a hotel room. Don't know what hotel yet, of course, and our plans are not set in stone yet. January 09 is the deadline for setting plans in stone!

I just meant that I was hoping someone would give me a floor to crash on before or after the con. I'll fork out cash for the hotel for during the convention... travelling there and back every day would be annoying >_<

My bad, for some reason I thought Christin meant for during the convention. :p

Haha and I misread her as one hour away, when she's really three hours away which makes it impossible, really. :)

I am in for this. I have one condition though..

I need volunteers with a death wish to join me in the following torture devices :evil

Superman: Ultimate Flight (http://www.sixflags.com/overGeorgia/rides/SupermanUltimateFlight.aspx)
http://img174.imageshack.us/img174/4204/ridesupermande6.jpg

Soar to new heights on the South's only flying coaster. Superman: Ultimate Flight uses state-of-the-art technology to create a thrill-ride experience that's as close as an earthling can get to true unassisted flight.

- Rocket face-first through 2759-feet of tortuous track
- Zoom through a one-of-kind, 78-foot "pretzel" loop at 60 mph
- Hurtle into dives, high-banked curves and spirals

Review of the ride (I believe it is similar to the one in New Jersey) LINK (http://www.ultimaterollercoaster.com/coasters/reviews/superman_sfgadv/)

Batman The Ride (http://www.sixflags.com/overGeorgia/rides/Batman.aspx)
http://img174.imageshack.us/img174/5695/ridebatmanom9.jpg
Something's rotten in Gotham. It's quiet—too quiet. Suddenly, the city erupts. Chaos reigns as all of Batman's most diabolical enemies attack simultaneously. There's only one way out—the Dark Knight's super-coaster.

- Travel through the ravaged streets of Gotham City
- Rocket underground and through the city's network of tunnels
- Escape via the Batcave on one of the most spell-binding coasters ever

Goliath (http://www.sixflags.com/overGeorgia/rides/goliath.aspx)
http://img174.imageshack.us/img174/4328/ridegoliathyc7.jpg
You've got a date with an 8.5-acre, 200-foot-tall steel juggernaut. Because of its sprawling expanse and towering peaks, Goliath wouldn't fit inside the park grounds, so we had to run it outside and back. The "Big G" has a colossal chip on his shoulder and can't wait to "show you around the park."

And many more.. 11 coasters in all. Article about the park LINK (http://www.aroundhawaii.com/lifestyle/travel/2007-02_six_flags_over_georgia.html?noscript=1)

The location of these torture machines is in Six Flags Over Georgia (http://www.sixflags.com/overGeorgia/), which is on Interstate 20, just west of Atlanta. Current price for one day pass is $39 (there might be rebates though, and 09 price is TBT). There are express shuttles (http://www.itsmarta.com/getthere/shuttles.htm) going from and to downtown Atlanta every 40 minutes (the shuttle ticket is free at certain stops). Although, looking at the 08 calendar (http://www.sixflags.com/overGeorgia/info/parkinfo.aspx) for august / september, it will be the end of the season in 09, so it will likely only be open during the weekend (when the convention is open), so you MIGHT have to decide if you want to spend all days at convention (bah... geeks!), or if you want to spend one day at the park (yay!) depending how the schedule looks like.

PS. Bonus points if you are a girl and scream.. ;)

I have NEVER been on a rollercoaster, but am a huge fan of the "STOP ASKING IF I'M OK AND JUST GO FASTER ALREADY, DAMMIT!"

Not all girls are sissies. I'm not going to snap in two if you push the pedal a bit. ;)

A rollercoaster park may kill me with the excitement. If I make it out, I may indulge in this.

That would be cool. Can make no promises on that one though, since it would depend on the itinerary, costs etc. I assume it would be in London, because that is the most central point for most?

Dasquian Belargic

London would probably be the cheapest option, at least for the Brits on board... being the capitol and all.

Dear God! Me and whomever I'm dragging along to this thing will DEFINITELY be up for the Roller coasters, especially Batman and Superman. Goliath seems a lot like Apollo's Chariot in Busch Gardens for me.

I'll most likely be able to head out for a while, though it'll be centred for me and my friends around Six Flags, but damn if I won't waste some time with you guys.

I know one of my friends won't be able to resist the roller-coasters.

Lilaena De'Ville

Charley knows how I am on rollercoasters. :uhoh We went to Six Flags Over Georgia!

Going on a day trip to Six Flags is an awesome idea and should be planned into the experience. Perhaps a day before the convention or a day after? Some people may want to factor in rental car cost as the people who live close by probably don't own their own buses. :)

Oh, HELL yes. I want to compare Six Flags - Great America to this place. Oh, Miranda, my sister and I will probably be hiking it out via car. We'd probably be heading by the Chicago are if transportation is an issue for you.

Okay I'm coming over too, and similarly to Jen I'd be coming a bit earlier than that too so yeah... *puts hand up cautiously* ... I'd be extremely grateful to anyone willing to put me up for a while before the con (if there's no room other than outside I'm fine bringing my tent :p). Same as Jen I'd stay in some place in Atlanta during the con - maybe we can get something cheaper than those hotels?

I'll be able to invade the US from London, too.... actually I'll even take Nya with me, since her dad can pick her up then and have her for a while or so. I'll probably have two weeks to travel around so maybe I can visit some more people...

Kevin Sorbo, Virginia Hey, Gigi Edgley, and a bunch of other people I don't know!

I've been wanting to go to Dragon*Con for a while now and it's within reasonable driving distance so I'll probably get something figured out by next year. I'd prefer to stay in one of the main hotels if I have the cash. That's where the action is and I'm always afraid I'll miss something if I'm not right there. Maybe I'll talk some friends into going and split a room.

If I don't "show up" assume you guys are too weird/scary/annoying and I just pretended not to know any of you. :)

And I will not ride roller coasters. No. Don't even try.

Superman is pretty fun, but my favorite is the Georgia Cyclone. It's mean as hell if wooden coasters are your thing. Most of them are all good.

Also, Atlanta has the World of Coke museum, and as well, there are places to go shooting if anybody wants to get involved with that. I know of a range that's just east of ATL.

Lots of places to eat and such as well, especially around Buckhead.

Providing I don't end up jobless between now and the meet-up, I'll definitely be attending this shin-dig. I think Droo is in the same boat as me. So Jen, looks like we'll be chin-wagging on the way over the pond. Assuming I don't fall asleep - which I tend to do when I'm 30,000 feet in the air.

Just thinking about it, I feel the urge to coin a phrase belonging to Prince John...

"Oodelalee - a meet-up...how exciting!"

I should be able to make it to Dragoncon next year, if all goes according to plan. It's about a seven to ten hour drive from my location (depending on traffic) so I'll probably end up driving up. Urrrgh... Rollercoasters. Never been on them. Want to.

Hopefully I will have been able to save and my life will hopefully be back to a reasonable norm way before then that allows me to run away for this.

Oh, and the ammo comment doesn't scare me. It only gives me an excuse to truly start investing in knives and brushing up on my natural sneakiness. :lol

D-Con 2009 eh? Heh, funny thing is a few of my old outpost members from the 501st legion in Hawaii are planning to go to it also. If I can make it next year, I would definitely love to meet any of you.

I went to D-Con of 2003 and it was a blast. I flew from Hawaii to Pittsburgh, met up with another 501st member from PA and we both drove down to GA. Cool thing about it was, our hotel room was smack next door to Richard Hatch ( original Capt. Apollo ) so got to hang out for a few.

Not sure if they still do this, but 2003 D-Con was held in the Marriot and across the street at the Hyatt was the Gothic Con. So you rubbed elbows with some famous people and ran across the street to party up with live Goth concerts held every two hours.

Rollercoasters are boring. I would suggest doing some trad climbing with me instead--nothing like dangling 200+ feet in the air, nothing below you, a rope hanging from your harness limply as your arms begin to burn out and you fiddle with the next placement to protect your life before you pull over a lip (might make the trip down with my climbing partner if there are any good routes in the area... we'll see).

Anyway, I'm set on funds. As long as I don't buy tons of new toys, I should be good.

ALSO -

Someone with more artistic skill than I needs to start designing something we can iron onto shirts. Everyone can print their own onto transfer paper and create their own Con shirt!

Also if people from other boards come along too, we could create something similar but personalized to the board they are coming from. We will create a STIR if we all have matching/similar shirts on.

^ That's an "overflow" hotel which has been recommended to me, on the basis that it is within very close walking distance of the host hotels, and has yet to sell out. (see my little map HERE (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?saddr=255+Courtland+Street+NE,+Atlanta,+GA+30 303,+United+States+%28Atlanta+Hilton+Racquet+Club% 29&geocode=CcR29UThjN0JFSEpAwIdYWr4-iFW1vzQdze2vg&dirflg=&daddr=311+Courtland+Street+Northeast+Atlanta,+GA++ 30303&f=d&dq=hilton+atlanta&sll=33.761569,-84.383135&sspn=0.006295,0.006295&cid=33761569,-84383135,13742232300714514006&ie=UTF8&ll=33.762586,-84.382778&spn=0.00396,0.009656&z=17) for a demonstration of how near the Red Roof Inn is to the Atlanta Hilton)

I already checked out how much the going rate is, per night, for stays during the con.

(ROOM FOR TWO) STANDARD KING BED NON-SMOKING - Standard Rate $129.99 USD
(ROOM FOR TWO) DELUXE 2 FULL BEDS NONSMOKING, MICRO FRIDGE - Standard Rate $149.99 USD
(ROOM FOR FOUR) DELUXE 2 FULL BEDS NONSMOKING, MICRO FRIDGE - Standard Rate $169.99 USD

So a three-night stay in a four-person room would cost roughly $127 per person (or $170 for a four-night stay), where as the room for two would cost $223 per person for a three-night stay ($298 for four nights). I guess it depends on who you are comfortable bunking with. I didn't check out the rate for a one person, single room, since I figured everyone would be staying with someone... more fun that way :) Also cheaper!

Anyway, that should just provide some indication of hotel prices, I guess. If anyone else wants to look into it and try to find some place cheaper, which is just as close by, go for it. I just thought it would be cool if we tried to co-ordinate where we are staying, as it would make getting together (either for the Con or for other activities) soooo much easier.

To be noted - the host hotels have rooms reserved for Dragon*Con, so they may say that they are sold out now when they are not. You have to mention dragon*con to get the deals.

However. Places like the Hilton are REALLY EXPENSIVE compared to say, the Red Roof Inn. I think Red Roof is a good place to go for us.

Did people still want to plan a trip there? And for the day before... or the day after the Con?

I think we may need to plan on more than three nights for staying at the hotel. I can't see the times for the Con, like how late it runs on the 7th, or what time it starts up on the 4th.

edit edit: RR Inn has group reservations, but we'd have to have ten rooms reserved. I can look into it if I know we have at least ten rooms needed. So far I think we have... four?

Dasquian Belargic
Nov 15th, 2008, 06:28:21 PM
I do want to go to Six Flags yes please and Red Roof Inn is pretty convinient for that too. Four or five nights seems like it would be a better set-up from my POV, so we can see some other sights beside the con.

I think Dani, Raz, Raz's sister and I are probably gonna get a 4-person room together... but if we can group-book to get some discount, all the better. Also

To be noted - the host hotels have rooms reserved for Dragon*Con, so they may say that they are sold out now when they are not. You have to mention dragon*con to get the deals.

People have called up about this kinda thing and basically the whole 'block' for DC (i.e. the special deals) is booked out.. in the majority of the hotels. Red Roof is cheaper than them all though, so IMO it's better!

Nov 17th, 2008, 03:02:01 PM
Yes but the way I see it is that the only way I could go would be on relatively short notice. And short notice usually means more expensive, and that I cannot afford. I'd hoped to make it a week or two over there in the US, but I've got a year of practicals ahead of me next year and school starts on the 8th or something, and there are prelim classes before that begins, so there's no chance I could get away for longer than a few days - and that, for an 8hour flight, is just not really manageable.
Maybe if I win the lottery and they suddenly decide to switch the summer vacations around....

I wonder what people think about renting a house in the area... we'd need a car for driving but... it would be very cost effective. For instance, the one I linked to is $219 a night and sleeps 8, that's just $28 a night per person. I don't know that we could find one close enough to the convention center though. Or that we'd want to be in such close quarters with each other for the weekend. :p

That's actually a pretty cool idea. They have parking, so we could just use the 'Marta' rail system to get to the convention. The bedroom situation doesn't sound too bad either:

2 bedrooms, sleeps maximum of 8 people
Bedroom 1 - 1 Queen, Sleeps up to 2
Bedroom 2 - 2 Double, Sleeps up to 4
Family Room - 1 Sleep Sofa /Futon, Sleeps up to 2I'd be up for that.

I'm just thinking, before you commit to anything, there are probably more than just 9 people who wants to go (I am one of those), so maybe we should look at an even bigger house.

This one for example, is slightly more expensive at $289 per night, but has 3 bedrooms (2 queen size and 2 full size beds), pull out sofa, 2 queen size air mattresses (included), and got VERY favorable reviews from convention guests.

^ That one looks cool too... sleeps 10.

So long as we have 10 people willing to commit to going (which with the addition of Yog, we do!) then I am cool going to the slightly more expensive place. It's still only like $28.90 a night per person, which would make it, $144 for the 5 nights?

5 x $289 = $1445.00 / 10 = $144.50 per person for the whole five day shebang. If more people commit, we can roll out sleeping bags and make an even cheaper stay of it.

12 people = $120.42
14 people = $103.21
etc

So basically, any additional schmoes we add to the bandwagon will knock approximately $10 off of everybody's stay.

Right now, I need to make sure we have solid commitments before I pull the trigger on this plan. You guys are cool and I've been friends with you forever, but if I'm holding the bag on a $200+ deposit I will most certainly extraordinarily render you to an all expense paid for stay a considerably more uncomfortable destination >D

I already bought my Con ticket so I am totally dead cert on coming. No way am I missing out on the geek party house :lol

Since Erin doesn't have internet access at the minute, I'm happy to throw both of our parts of the deposit your way - which I guess would be $40, assuming we are putting down 1/10th each.

Don't worry about pre-paying the deposit, all I care about is that you guys are locked in at this point. I'll set up a paypal thingamaboo when we get closer to the day so we can all pay in.

Also, if possible, getting everybody's travel itineraries on when you're coming in would be great. It would let us know if thursday is a complete wash, or if we can actually do something on that day as well :)

This is a total of 11 people in Robot House. We have interest from some other people from other RPing boards, but before we let them in we want to make sure everyone from this board who wants to gets a chance to be in the house.

So, speak now! Or... forever hold your peace. >D

Okay, after looking over the agreement I was sent, I'm not sure that the rental is going to be a good idea. It explicitly mentions no parties and other such things. The information they want is a bit more than I'm comfortable sending over a fax. I looked up the company on BBB.org and they rate as unsatisfactory, so I am not feeling very comfortable about this.

I think our best option is going to be to find a hotel and book a few rooms, to be honest.

Well there is a pretty big list of countries that need to do this, to get into the US. I only knew about it because I was looking at a flight price quote and it said at the bottom, don't forget to do your visa waiver (or whatever its called). I was kind of baffled by it really, I guess because I am just so used to travelling in the EU where all you need is to flash your passport, go through airport security checks, and you're good to go.

The only place I've ever had to apply to get into was Turkey and that was yeeears ago.

At the time when Morg got the room, there were no others left for the con dates.. but you could try calling up about cancellations?
