There are apparently rooms available at the Con hotels though I don't know at what price. Some of you who are without a place to stay just need to man up and reserve a room together. :mneh

So apparently a lot of people have been asking whether I will be attending this. While most of these people are probably imaginary, at least two are not.

Here, now, is THE STATUS OF TONDRY.

I've never been to DragonCon. I'd like to go, and I'd like to go when I won't be 100% alone. There are two factors that will determine whether I can attend.

a) whether I can arrange for the time off from work
b) whether I have enough leave to cover the time off.

(some of you may notice that I did not mention money and those of you who did should stop focusing on things that don't matter and start paying attention)

My work just notified those of us wishing to take leave between now and the end of the year to submit "Wish List" dates for potential approval. I will be submitting enough dates to cover this time, though whether I get them off is another question entirely.

The question of leave is far more relevant.

I have sufficient current leave balance to cover some time off between now and the end of the year. However, it is not enough to encompass other dates and times that have a higher priority than this weekend (read, holidays and other family events). So whether I will be able to attend depends on whether they offer the opportunity for us to work for leave over the course of the filing season, and if so, how much I am able to accrue. Given that the state of Virginia currently has a budget shortfall, the ability to work for leave is not guaranteed.

So truth be told, I have no idea whether I can attend. I will attempt to start solidifying things as soon as I can, however that may begin in March or April.

Net result: if anyone has an extra spot reserved in their planning that isn't occupied through no fault of their own, please contact me. ^_^

FYI guys the host hotels have SOME rooms left:

http://www.dragoncon.org/location.php#Host_Hotels

You can get singles, doubles, triples and quads in both the Hilton and the Sheraton. Prices range from $152 to $215 per night (the best deal obviously being getting the $215 quad at the Hilton and splitting it four ways!). The DC site has contact details for booking, though you have to make sure you mention you are with the Con when booking to get a discounted rate.

Some more guests added.. here's a couple that might be of interest to some here:

Timothy Zahn (http://www.dragoncon.org/dc_guest_detail.php?id=1428)
Timothy Zahn is the author of thirty-five science fiction books, including eight Star Wars books, the young-adult Dragonback series, the Cobra series, and the upcoming FROM THE ASHES, a prequel to next year's movie TERMINATOR SALVATION.

»Kevin J. Anderson (http://www.dragoncon.org/dc_guest_detail.php?id=95)
Kevin J Anderson has published over 100 novels, 46 of which have been national or international bestsellers; he is best known for his DUNE books with Brian Herbert, Star Wars novels, and his own "Saga of Seven Suns" and THE EDGE OF THE WORLD.

»Charlaine Harris (http://www.dragoncon.org/dc_guest_detail.php?id=1978)
Charlaine Harris has been a published novelist for over twenty-five years. Not a traditional mystery, nor yet pure science fiction or romance, DEAD UNTIL DARK broke genre boundaries to appeal to a wide audience of people who just enjoy a good adventure. Each subsequent book about Sookie Stackhouse, telepathic Louisiana barmaid and friend to vampires, werewolves, and various other odd creatures, has drawn more readers. The southern vampire books are published in Japan, Great Britain, Greece, Germany, Thailand, Spain, France, and Russia.

Question: When looking for a hotel should I look only at the Downtown area or is Buckhead good too? I know nothing about Atlanta. >_<

Dasquian Belargic
Feb 4th, 2009, 01:08:26 PM
I just did a quick Google Maps search and it looks like Buckhead is about 8 miles from Downtown Atlanta.

Check out the Marta map: http://www.itsmarta.com/getthere/schedules/index-rail.htm

Peachtree Center (near the middle of the map on the red/orange line) is where the Con is. It looks like if you go.. north (?) about 5 or 6 stops you get to Buckhead. The site says it takes 16 mins to travel between Buckhead and Five Points Station (which is one stop further away from Buckhead than Peachtree).

So in summary if you are willing to get on MARTA and travel about 15 minutes, then yes stay in Buckhead :mneh

Something I just read on Livejournal

For those looking for cheap flights, AirTran and Southwest are having a sale. I just purchased my round trip tickets from Chicago for $147 from Tran Air, which included tax and fees.

So if you don't have flights yet, maybe try looking into those sites?

Lilaena De'Ville
Feb 26th, 2009, 12:36:58 PM
Looking now... though I probably won't be getting airfare for about two more months due to budget shortfalls. Though... we'll see.

edit: Southwest STILL doesnt' fly to Atlanta so I don't know what they're talking about...

Mu Satach

Yeah I think its ridiculous when I may have to spend more for my flight than Jenny did to cross the ocean. :shakefist

Yeah I don't really understand this either. Especially since I am flying from the Netherlands (I have to connect at Amsterdam Schiphol). I can only guess it's because I'm coming through Schiphol, which is apparently a major connecting hub for the whole of Europe? After all it's usually cheaper to fly from one huge city to another huge city, than it is to fly from a smaller airport.

Lilaena De'Ville
Feb 27th, 2009, 12:27:24 PM
My researched flights all send me to Seattle then to Atlanta. Stupid airlines. :shakefist

yeah, but it feels like flying backwards to go forwards. Worse yet, the distance your flying backwards is almost negligible.

Its not cheaper, its just the only way to get to Atlanta. :p

Dasquian Belargic
Feb 28th, 2009, 04:07:40 PM
10 hrs 40 mins I will be in the air. Not counting changeover time at Amsterdam (at least 2 hours, which I have to fly 'backwards' for). auuuugh.

Really, are you going to be facing a worse flight time than that? :mneh

Lilaena
Mar 2nd, 2009, 05:03:16 PM
Found a cheaper flight, but its LONGER THAN YOURS JENNY and it sends me to NC and then to TX and then to Atlanta, which just seems retarded, no offense to any mentally challenged individuals.

Dasquian Belargic
Mar 2nd, 2009, 06:46:47 PM
If I had flown from London, I could have gone direct and my flight would have been shorter. But every flight from Newcastle went via at least one other place, sometimes two - like Newcastle, London, New York and finally then Atlanta. It would have been a neat little world tour, if I'd actually gotten to spend some time in NYC for instance... but no :mneh

Keep hunting, anyway.

Dasquian Belargic

Soon it will only be 5 months to go. FIVE MONTHS. So for all you people who are indecisive, now is the moment to decide!

Right now.

Or maybe just sometime in the next couple of weeks.

Seriously thought, decide. You need some place to stay >_>

Yesterday, I received word from work that I have been given the green light on all the requested vacation time I put in for. Additionally, today I did the math and I worked out that I will have sufficient leave to cover all the time off I am scheduling. I am now in the process of making vacation arrangements.

My first vacation is scheduled for the beginning of July. I'll be setting up travel arrangements for that first. However, I'm definitely starting to think about the needs for DragonCon attendance.

The biggest hurdle at this point is that I will need lodging. Does anyone currently have extra space?

Dasquian Belargic
Apr 4th, 2009, 03:25:47 PM
I seem to remember that Callista had booked an extra reservation somewhere, that she said people would be able to take off her hands if they needed a place. I don't know if that's still the case though... Calli? :huh

EDIT: I spoke to Callista and she does have an extra room, but it's being reserved for last minute additions and arrivals... i.e. if people don't have somewhere to stay come August.

I don't know if there is space with Mu/Lilaena/Ty?

I live a little under an hour away from the airport in Atlanta, at least at that point I will be, and I am also more than willing to give anyone a ride if they need it to where ever they might be staying and what not. Blah blah, so on and so forth, enter all other nice conveniences one could afford to offer.

Ah, to note. I have a place that I can offer a small to medium sized group that is 30 minutes from the airport, so about 40ish from Dragon Con altogether, as a place to stay for the evenings. I figure it can hold 6 to 8 people comfortably. There is at least one bed I can confirm available, two air mattresses, and three or four pieces of furniture upon which a human might be able to sleep. Given that, I'd think it could hold 12-15 if people are ok with sharing personal space, but thats all tried and true by people who didn't care in the first place ;). Either way, this is available for individuals who have travel plans that might, as was put by Charlie, implode for whatever reason. I can offer the transportation for that as well. :D

Question - if we fly in and out of Birmingham AL, can we get a ride from the Hicks? Not the hicks, I'm sure we could find some but that's just scary. ^_^; Its almost half the price to fly to AL than into GA.

If we end up bringing Owen (and all his stuffs) then we'll get a rental car. Just adding one small person adds like two tons to the amount of luggage we have to carry, lol!

You sure you want to bring a bebbe to all of this? I'm not sure what amenities there are at Dragoncon for that, but you're gonna be whooped at the end of every day and not really gonna be able to go out and about if you do.

Maybe they have Master Yoda's ball pit and romper room there but I'd probably look a little before you decide on that.

Lilaena De'Ville

Believe me, I know what's involved in dragging Owen along. Its a matter of if he has a place to stay while we're gone or not.

As it is I'm going to be 8 months pregnant and dead tired at the end of every day anyway and probably not going to be wanting to stay up all night and party with you alkys.

The D*C site isn't working at the minute but there is definitely some kind of child care available (though I don't think it's free)

You should have made a reservation earlier :mneh The host hotels rooms' went on sale last year, just after Dragon*Con 2008 finished.. so it's not surprise that the majority of the rooms were gone by the beginning of 2009.

We have at least one group staying in the Hilton, though... so I am going to make a point of partying in their swanky room at least once ;D

Shitting hell.

The pound has fallen against the dollar and euro, hit by uncertainty over the UK's political situation after several ministers resigned from the cabinet.

The pound slid against the dollar to $1.5959, a one-week low, but recovered to $1.5993. Sterling hit a two-week low against the euro of 1.1277 euros.

On Wednesday, the pound had hit a seven-month high of almost $1.67.

:shakefist start climbing again!

I'll start a tat design thread in a little bit so we can post up what we're all thinking about getting :)

Trudy Bennett
Jun 12th, 2009, 11:46:17 AM
I can't bring myself to get ink by some random artist I haven't really had some good discussions with about the artwork before he does it. I just can't. So spur of the moment on vacation does not work for me at all. ESPECIALLY because I have like my next 4 I'd like to get planned out and they are complicated and may take more than one sitting. >_<
But I should have a newer tattoo by the time Sept rolls around anyway, though. :D

But yes, piercings are free game. ;)

Dasquian Belargic

I think I am getting a helix this weekend. Time to take my ear piercing virginity.

Well, I'm leaning more toward when folks are here in Alabama. We have friends who go to a parlor for all of their work, and the artists there are very good so I'm not really all that worried.

Not to mention, I don't plan on getting anything huge, just a simple little design that I drew up myself. Not sure where I'm gonna put it though; maybe on the underside of my forearm or hip :)

edit - he told me last night that he wanted both ears and his eyebrow, but I don't know about the eyebrow. For now, an ear is fine with me, heh. Maybe in the future both, but we'll see.

Lilaena De'Ville
Jun 12th, 2009, 12:22:33 PM

:( Such is the sadness of most surface piercings from what I understand. Unless you're insanely careful they have a tendency to migrate/reject.

Which is really the one thing (ok...two...I need to lose a bit of weight, yep) keeping me from getting the one piercing I realllyyyy want. *wistful sigh*

...probably won't stop me from getting the other piercing I want though when I'm out there. lmao... I'm a glutton for punishment some days.
