Hot off the heels of cancelling another big-budget production, HBO has announced that they will be adapting George R. R. Martin's beloved fantasy series, starting with "A Game of Thrones". The way it's currently planned, each book will constitute one season of the show.
I'm cautiously optimistic; They cancelled Rome because it was just way too expensive to produce, but I can't see ASoIaF being much cheaper. At any rate, we probably won't be seeing this until at least late 2008.

Fun idea in concept, I'm not sure how well it'll do though.
Rome was an excellent series, from the limited amount I saw of it, kind of disappointed to see it get dropped.

Done right, this could easily be as good as Rome. I'm not getting my hopes up, though, just in case.

It could be, but it certainly wouldn't have Rome's accessability, that's for sure.

Tom McCarthy has come aboard to direct HBO's fantasy pilot "Game of Thrones," on which the star of his first feature, "The Station Agent's" Peter Dinklage, has been tapped for a key role.
Based on George R.R. Martin's best-selling "Songs of Fire and Ice" novels, "Thrones" is described as an epic struggle for power set in a vast and violent fantasy kingdom. Dinklage will play Tyrion, the Queen's brother who is treated as an outsier because of his size.
David Benioff and D.B. Weiss penned the pilot script and are exec producing. HBO Entertainment president-turned-producer Carolyn Strauss, Management 360's Guymon Casady, Vince Gerardis, Ralph Vicinanza and Martin serve as co-exec producers, and Mark Huffam and Frank Doelger are producers.
"Thrones" is slated to film in the third quarter in Belfast, Northern Ireland, in what the country's First Minister Peter Robinson hails as "the first TV production of such vast size and scale that has been filmed in Northern Ireland."
Dinklage, repped by manager David Ginsberg and attorney Karl Austen, is filming two features: the indie "Pete Smalls Is Dead," which he also co-produces, and Screen Gems/Sidney Kimmel's remake of "Death at a Funeral."
"Thrones" marks the first TV directorial gig for the Gersh-repped McCarthy, an actor who wrote and directed two features, 2003's "Station Agent" and 2007's "The Visitor," both of which landed him Indie Spirit Awards. On the acting side, McCarthy next appears in "2012."
On his livejournal GRRM linked to this image of Dinklage, which I presume is him in character as Tyrion: http://pics.livejournal.com/grrm/pic/0004gbgk/ Not exactly how I pictured him but he does look the part!

In the adaptation of the George R.R. Martin fantasy-book series, Coster-Waldau will play Jaime Lannister, one of the king's guards and a ruthless usurper of the previous king. The actor, most recently seen in Ron Moore's Fox pilot "Virtuality," is repped by WME, Impression and Independent Talent Group.
Another addition is Tamzin Merchant (Showtime's "The Tudors"), who'll play Daenerys, an exiled teenage princess.
Also new to the cast: Richard Madden ("Hope Springs") as Stark's eldest son, Robb; Iain Glen ("Into the Storm") as Ser Jorah Mormont, a disgraced knight; Alfie Allen ("The Other Boleyn Girl") as Theon, Stark's young ward; Sophie Turner ("Doctor Who"), as Stark's eldest daughter, Sansa; Maisie Williams as Stark's young tomboy daughter, Arya.

And getting to the point of a sixth season is a problem HBO would love to have with this show.
Let's be honest it is not likely that this show is getting more than 2 seasons if it is not a real game changer.

Hell this show needs a third season...I just read this scene in "A storm of swords"...in which Robb dies. This is so heartbreaking and I didn't see this treachery coming after Edmure's future wife(now widow I guess) was not one of Walder's ugly daughters. This was certainly a highlight in the books so far...I guess Arya has a lot more names to add to her prayer now. This is so heartbreaking.
BTW thanks for this thread people since without it I would have missed a lot of fun. I guess it is time to order the 4th book soon...

^^I totaly agree with you Lil. A storm of swords was the best book in the series so far. Once I am done with a feast for crows I would love to share some theories here where I think the story is heading. I have got my own theory right now who Jon's mother is.
...but I guess I will share this with you once I am done with the 4th book.
oh and btw my brother's wedding is this weekend...
...so according to Martin I should be very carefull: Surviving a battle seems to be a lot more easy than a wedding. I caught myself feeling pitty for poor little Joffrey. Assholes like him should die by the sword and not by poison.
Lilaena De'Ville
May 5th, 2010, 03:44:15 PM
Joffrey deserves no pity. I frickin hate that kid. It was intensely satisfying that he died. Even though it was an awful way to go.
Feast is a good book, but nothing can really compare to Storm of Swords.
edit: As far as theories as to who Jon's mom is, I have my own as well. But I didn't really come up with myself, I read other people's theories on it. It seems sound though! And Jon isn't really in Feast at all.

I hope the writers for the show are ready to improvise the 5th season. ;)
Hehe I think I now understand what you mean because it won't be possibel to tell the story like he did in a Feast for Crows. If they want to do it right they have to split a Storm of Swords into 2 seasons because a lot of shit is going down in this book and it really deserves to be not rushed in any way. Then they will need to merge A dance with dragons and a feast for crows into 2 simultanious running seasons otherwise they would have to send 50% of the cast on vacation for a year.
So the production plan would look a little bit lik this:
A Game of Thrones 2011
A Clash of Kings 2012
A Storm of Swords (Part one) 2013
A Storm of Swords (Part two) 2014
A Feast for Crows (Part one) and A Dance with Dragons (Part one) 2015
A Feast for Crows (Part two) and A Dance with Dragons (Part two) 2016
(so George R.R. Martin has got 5 years from now to finish a Dance with Dragons and the Wind of Winter)
The Winds of Winters 2017
(If he tries to merge the story lines again this might be just as big as A Storm of Swords)
A Dream of Spring 2018 or 2019
(OK if Martin does not know how his Song of Ice and Fire ends until 2017 or 2018 HBO will be screwed or happy that they have cancelled this show years ago)
Daria Nytherciria
May 31st, 2010, 05:07:27 AM
I hope we do get more than a couple of seasons out of this. There is so much potential, and the cast seems to be largely people who don't have any other big commitments on the horizon, people who generally have been playing smaller roles so should hopefully relish the chance to be centre stage - which the exception of Sean Bean, but for obvious reasons he has a limited time with the show so that shouldn't be a problem.

Yeah that's the great thing about GRRM: he hints more than he actually writes...but seriously Holly, Jaime himself says that it was a good choice by the Tyrells to give him the white coat since it is hard to find a match for a man with his preferences.
There is one scene in A Game of Thrones where Arya overhears a conversation in the catacombs of the Red Keep. This conversation of conspirators is never ever mentioned in the books again although the identity of the people talking to each others is never revealed it is obvious that we must know at least one of them and that they are part of a bigger plan. A Feast for Crows Spoiler My theory is that one of these characters must be either Varys, Pycelle or Little Finger.
A Feast for Crows is not as awesome as A Storm of Swords (BTW Jenny finish reading this book it is great!) but one scene with Little Finger and Sansa made me rethink and evaluate who is really a player and who is pawn in this Game of Thrones. This is what makes this book so enjoyable in the end: So many conspiracys are hinted that it is hard to track them all.
Cersei is obviously a pawn... and so is Stannis but I never saw it coming that the prince of Dorne is a player although there are some hints in Danys storyline as well at least I try to read this into the story. I still haven't figured out if Little Finger is a player or a pawn that wants to become a queen. He obviously has a plan of his own.

Yeah James Callis would be awesome.
We know from a aGoT and aSoS that Littlefinger knows some of the secret passages himself since he helpes Eddard and Sansa (here through the help of Ser Dontos) to leave the Red Keep.
Varys on the other hand was like Ser Barristan Selmy a man of the Targayen and his loyalty torwards people is questionable.
I still haven't decided if he is a player or a pawn on the field and if he is a pawn who is playing him?

EDIT:
An urgent casting call has gone out for Will, the ranger from the prologue. Here is the text of the breakdown:
Will – Aged 20. A young ranger working with the Night’s Watchmen. A young self-reliant outsider with characterful face, but honest and dependable. Young, trust-worthy and hard-working. A brave fighter from humble origins. We want an interesting face for this part…
Has a good scene in which he stands up to an arrogant and ambitious young nobleman and proves his own well-earned common sense. 1 episode

Shae is one of my favorite characters since you so want her to be too good to be true.
I had a discussion with a friend of mine that I gave my ASOIAF books to read and we discussed about Sibel being Shae. We agreed that she is definetly a good choice for a character like Shae. We really liked her in Heads-On and she is kind of a Femme Fatale.

Major plot spoiler - His casting is proof that he only likes being attached to fantasy projects if he gets to die in the first part.
Maybe its to avoid being typecast, but I think that IS beginning to be his type.

Ever since I spotted a samurai armor in this show and heard rumors that there were plans to actually give the Lannisters samurai swords I started to question the art direction of this show. I just hope that the red Samurai Armor is for Thoros or the brave companions otherwise this will be hard to live with.
In my mind Jaime will always look like on the picture below. But there are some rumors that he is one of those guys on a horse wearing a grey and golden armor and a strange helmet. I just hope that this is just a random gold cloak.
In my mind the Starks must look like German Knights since they already have a good German name. The Lannisters are English(Red/Golden Lions...you get the picture) and the Baratheons are Italian while Riverun and the Vale is definetly France since all the Tullys are useless except for Brynden Tully.

The picture above and this picture are completly defining for me how ASOAF has to look like. But right here I have to discourage everyone who has not read all the released books to not search the web for fanart since you are going to spoil yourself a lot since all the big plot points have a dynamic that cries for being turned into painted art.

I know its nit-picky, but it bothers me that they didn't try to make Sean Bean's hair darker. Starks are supposed to have dark hair, and Arya and Jon take after him, while the other kids are more like Catelyn with auburn hair. Its not as bad as if they'd disregarded hair color for the Lannisters or the Baratheon children, but still.
I'm sure its not a big deal. :p But in that poster Ned looks very dirty blond.

As soon as they announced it was Aiden Gillen, I knew they'd picked the right guy. Anyone who is familiar with his time as Tommy Carcetti on The Wire would have to agree with me... he is just perfect for the part.

I don't think she's ugly either. I mean, she obviously isn't as striking as Cersei - but that's intentional. She looks like a normal woman! I haven't seen her in anything else but she seems like a great actress so far. And she's Irish so hooray for the UK talent in this show.

House Targaryen were a slow burner (harhar) for me, in the books. The further their story progresses, the more interesting they become.
HBO has a Viewers Guide (http://viewers-guide.hbo.com/game-of-thrones/?cmpid=ABC794) to Westeros and the Houses online now, which actually has a picture of Loras Tyrell. He doesn't look anything like I imagined! :o Lancel Lannister looks like more of a pansy than the Knight of Flowers.

May I have your attention please:
Much rumored about and speculated on, HBO has now made it official. Game of Thrones will be returning for a second season! Here is the press release:
HBO RENEWS GAME OF THRONES FOR SECOND SEASON
LOS ANGELES, April 19, 2011 – Following strong critical and viewer response to the series’ April 17 debut, HBO has renewed GAME OF THRONES for a second season, it was announced today by Michael Lombardo, president, HBO Programming.
“We are delighted by the way David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have brought George R.R. Martin’s amazing book series to the screen, and thrilled by the support of the media and our viewers,” said Lombardo. “This is the continuation of an exciting creative partnership.”
Based on the bestselling fantasy book series “A Song of Ice and Fire,” by George R.R. Martin, GAME OF THRONES follows kings and queens, knights and renegades, liars and noblemen as they vie for power in a land where summers span decades and winters can last a lifetime.
Among the early critical raves, TV Guide has called the show “a crowning triumph” and “brilliant,” while the Los Angeles Times termed GAME OF THRONES “a great and thundering series,” as well as “wild and bewitching.” The Hollywood Reporter praised the “excellent storytelling, superb acting and stunning visual effects,” and the New York Post observed that the “art directing, acting and incredible sets are as breathtaking as the massive scope of the series.”
The gross audience for the premiere night of GAME OF THRONES on the main HBO channel was 4.2 million viewers.

They can justify casting whoever they want anyway - Tyrion is supposed to be pretty hideous but obviously Peter Dinklage is a good looking guy. In that society a dwarf is hideous no matter what they actually look like. And Brienne is "ugly" because she's big and mannish, and doesn't conform to society's norms of what a woman should be or do.

Last night's episode was... awesome.
Spoilers below for Episode 2, The Kingsroad:
Tyrion's interaction with Joffrey and the other Baratheon kids was perfect. Plus it was cathartic to see Joff get slapped around.
HUGE divergence from the book - Cersei's tender scene with Catelyn. Are they trying to humanize her? Was her story about the dead baby true? Or all just a clever lie that actually proves her conniving and cold status? I'm going with the latter.
Summer to the rescue was AWESOME. They didn't explain that Cat had had the direwolf tied up outside because she didn't want it near Bran, but its okay. End result, the same. Direwolves are awesome. Every kid should have one. Cat's struggle with the assassin was really good too. It was longer than I imagined in the book, but I liked it. I would have done the same thing if I were her.
No one introduces Theon, who is this ugly dude promising to fight with Rob? I imagine they will properly explain him in time. Maester Luwin is awesome, and yes, he's wearing his chain! Its so huge!
The bit with Dany and her slave was not as 'lesbiany' as some reviewers made it out to be. Her taking charge and forcing Drogo to see her as a person and not just a sex receptacle was a great point in the book and its a good part of the show. Plus, Jason Momoa :swoon:
Jon and Tyrion talking was a great scene as well, as was Robert and Ned talking about their exploits in years past. They are very believable as friends.
OH how can I forget NEEDLE! Great scene between Jon and Arya, and Nymeria nearly stole it with the 'gloves' bit. Those dogs are adorable.
The ribbons tied to Lady's collar were :3. Sansa is such a dumb princess, but she's only 13. Ty wanted to strangle her. The part between Joff, Arya, and Mycah played out exactly how it should, and it was great. I miss Nymeria already. And.... LADY :cry
I actually cried. So, so, so sad.
tl:dr - it was awesome. Can't wait til next week.

ep 2 spoilers
I thought we were introduced to Theon in the first episode. Doesn't he give Ned his sword, in the scene where the black brother is beheaded? and then we saw him with Robb and Jon, getting shaved? I don't think they explicitly said who he was, but there are a few characters like that who haven't had explicit introductions, but you can generally guess that their role is based on the action we've seen so far.
Jon and Arya made me :') they are adorable. Jon and Ned before they parted ways... also pretty sweet. Tyrion is probably my favourite character based on performances so far.
Cersei's "grief" was very interesting. It's one of the things discussed in the 'behind the scenes' video I posted above.

Jenny - No, I know he was in Episode 1, just they haven't referred to him by name. *I* know who he is, but I've read the books. People who haven't will not know he is someone of some importance and probably assume he's just another man at arms or something.

I am kind of watching the first few episodes with mixed feelings. Sometimes I remember scenes from the book differently or I am afraid that they forgot to mention a detail in a scene that I considered important.
I kind of feel like the first time I watched the Fellowship of the Ring. In the pause in the middle of the premiere I met a guy from school at the toilet of the theater and he told me that this movie is boring so far.
Now I sit at the couch with my girlfriend, we are both fanboys and so I always fear that people who did not read the books might feel left out or bored. So if you haven't read the book please tell me that you like it...
I noticed the Theon problem as well but there has not been a single chance for them to tell his story in a casual manner.
UPDATE Theon: There will be a scene in the next 4 episodes when Tyrion returns from the wall where he will have a conversation with Theon. This episode will most likely explain the complexity of his character.

I am LOVING this show... just completely loving it. I think being familiar with the characters makes it all a bit more ":3" worthy the entire time but the boyfriend hasn't read any of the books and he's enjoying it as well.
I think after ep 2 he was completely and totally hooked. XD He was all "They end on THAT?! Wtf?? ......... do we have another on the dvr? *pout*"
Overall I'm okay with them taking a few episodes to explain who everyone is and their importance. If it takes a while to get to Theon that's cool... after all they only have an hour every week and if they spent a whole ep going "And here's this person's back story!" it might get a little tedious.

Well it is never spelled out but it is hinted straight forward in the first book. Renly is always caring for his looks and he always speaks highly about Ser Loras' skills.
If you don't get it until the end of the 3rd book. Finally in the 4th it is sort of explained.

So I finally watched the 5th episode.
This was the best episode so far and I really liked the scenes that were not in the book. But what makes me the most happy about this episode is that it solved a mystery for me that has not been revealed in the book series yet.
BIG SPOILER WARNING:
Please don't read this if you have not finished "A feast for Crows"
This episode finally solved the issue of who Arya ear droped on. Now that I know that Illyrio Mopatis and Varys are working together. I finally might be able to assign him to a player in the game of thrones. Well obviously Littlefinger is playing his own game and if you have finished the 4th book you will know that the house of Martell seems to be still loyal to the true king of Westeros and Varys seems to play on their team.
The original plan must have been to get the Dothraki in the boat by arranging the marriage with Daenerys. Then they would marry Viserys to the daughter of the house Martel and try to conquer Westeros with the help of the Dothraki and Dorne.
So Varys might be a pawn in the game of thrones and not a schemer nor is he neutral how he always claims. It was wrong to trust the spider, Robert, He is still loyal to the Fire and Blood.
Lilaena De'Ville
May 21st, 2011, 12:55:34 PM
Related to the above: Varys has always been a player in the Game, I wouldn't call him a pawn. I don't see how you can say he's not a schemer - certainly he seems to be working toward bringing Dany back to Westeros but like Littlefinger I wouldn't be surprised to find that he has his own reasons for doing what he does.

Lilaena De'Ville
May 22nd, 2011, 09:30:53 AM
Most men don't marry a super hot chick and then spend their wedding night praying with their brother-in-law. Plus Jamie (? I think)'s comment to Loras about shoving a sword up 'some where even Renly never found.'
And come on, Rainbow guard? :lol Renly and Loras were faaaabulous. It is pretty subtle tbh but it is confirmed by GRRM. I think the fact we never have an explicit scene between them to spell it out is because they were never POV characters in the books, and they weren't being obvious about it. Other than the 'praying' together all night, a lot.
Its a little hilarious that some people are accusing HBO of adding this to further their 'gay agenda' when the characters are lovers in the books - granted I could have done without the weird blow job sound FX.

I think the ominously titled A Golden Crown was my favourite episode so far! The "trial" at the Eyrie was great. The scenes with Tyrion and Bronn continue to be some of the best in the series, IMO. But new viewers will not understand that Ned gets killed with his own sword.

Ah, the moment I had been dreading since this series started finally came.
Funny story. I only read the song of fire and ice because my girlfriend at the time raved about the books. I'm not a big reader. I grew up reading comic books and they're still my main source of 'reading'(Explains my grammar right?;)). So when she forced me to read the first few chapters of a 'Game of thrones' I wasn't impressed but she insisted I at least finish the book, so I did. Then I became hooked, obviously.
I don't know about the rest of you but when I read a book, or watch a movie, I tend to pick a 'horse', a character that I latch onto and root for through the whole thing. For example in the movie 'The departed' it was Matt Damons character. I almost won that one too! Damn you marky mark!
***********************
Massive spoilers below. Those who haven't read the bookS(plural) avoid at all costs!!!!!!!!
***********************
Anyway my first pick was Ned Stark. Then George killed him off! I was pretty shocked. What the hell? Who kills off their main characters. Especially so early in the book! A little devastated I moved on to Robb. I liked him second best anyway. To my ex's credit she never let on what was about to happen to him. That one really crushed me. I remember calling her right after finishing the chapter and being like "YOU KNEW THIS WHOLE TIME!?", so dumped.:lol So that's it. Every character I pick George has killed off. Although the last two are possibly still alive: The Hound, Brianne the Maid and Bronn.
Anyone know how many episodes are in the first season?

One thing that struck me today was how well it feels like the whole series has been paced so far. To begin with, I wondered how they would manage to cram all the important scenes and characters into just ten episodes, but now - a week before the finale - I think they've done a great job.
I am particularly excited to see the conclusion to Dany's section of the first book :ohno

It's Sean Bean, what did you expect?! He always gets killed off. It's a show about political intrigue and backstabbing, of course the most honorable guy is gonna get it! :mneh

This reminds me of my favorite Bronn quote so far:
Lysa:"You fought without honor"
Bronn(pointing at the moon door): "He did!"
Favorite Robb quote so far:

Watched the Finale last night. It was great. Argh. Season 2 cannot come fast enough.
Although I did have one gripe.I was expecting her to be bald but she still had hair at the end. Those that have read the books should know who I am talking about. Those that don't and accidentally read this will probably take it wildly out of context;).

I didn't mind that, Tear, its just an aesthetic decision and I think it worked just fine. I mean really, were you sad that there wasn't milk dripping out of her nipples and dragons nursing on them too? ;) Although I think right at the beginning of the dragon reveal the one in her lap was nursing.
Great episode. :D I'm sad I have to wait until April of next year for the next season though. :( I'll have an infant by then! *brain boggles*

I agree aesthetically it works just fine. I just thought it was a nice bit of symbolism to show how much she ends up changing as a character. Plus when you notice something in the books and the show doesn't show it right away you tend to point and go "Heeeeey.";)
Oh and having her hair burn to the point of being bald is a significantly more longstanding aesthetic then say her nipples dripping milk. However thought inducing that may be.

Incidentally this is hilarious - a fan's reaction to episode 9. He's done review/reaction videos to all the episodes (he's unspoiled so everything is a surprise) and he live streamed himself watching Episode 9. After that his roommate grabbed a camera and then...

Isnt that ironic, Tear.
My kids are addicted to GoT from the first episode.
I'd been telling them about the books for years, and they could see how
hyped I was about the HBO series coming and now....well, they are choked that they wont have more episodes until next spring, hahha.
The series has been outstanding so far, I agree.

Due to a technical error, Amazon.de shipped out a few copies of A Dance with Dragons yesterday. That means some lucky German customers wil be getting their hands on ADWD two weeks early. The issue has since been addressed, but the damage has already been done. It's only a matter of days-- hours really-- before someone somewhere leaks details about the long-awaited book. Be careful where you tread. Let us know if you've received ADWD, but please hold on to your thoughts and questions. We'll provide a more official thread to discuss the new book soon.
