Some time prior to the Battle of Endor, Barbacca was working at a manufacturing plant that produced components for Imperial shuttles and speeders. The specifics of the incident were never recorded, and Barbacca has never since revealed them to anyone, but it resulted in the Wookiee attacking one of his fellow slaves with his claws; in Wookiee culture, such an action is considered a heinous social crime, and thus Barbacca was ostricised from the group as a "Madclaw". After provoking several fights among his slave group, the Imperials - who didn't understand Wookiee society, and simply thought he was provoking them somehow - labelled him a "B.A." slave (for Bad Attitude) and had him removed from the work pool.

Scheduled to be "put down" because his usefulness to the Empire had run out, Barbacca was approached by the Imperial military, and offered the opportunity to redeem himself and escape his execution by serving in the military. It took some effort to convince him to cooperate with the people who had held him enslaved for his entire life, but he eventually agreed, and began to work with the Army as a mechanic and wilderness combat expert.
