As much as I enjoy SW, I'm going to commit sacrilege here and vote for Back to the Future - a film I absolutely love.

    #1 2001: A Space Odyssey

I was torn between that and A Clockwork Orange, but I don't really associate A Clockwork Orange with the Sci-Fi genre.

    WHERE THE HELL IS ALIENS???????

WHERE THE HELL IS EMPIRE STRIKES BACK?????

And fuck ET with a baseball bat. And 2001 too, it might have been scientifically accurate down to the last iota but it was the most appallingly boring movie and frankly did not do the book justice.

Star Wars is the most genuinely important film on that list and it does have some wonderous movie making, even if BTTF is a joyous romp and a rather interesting and surprisingly thoughtful look at time travel.

If ESB had been on the list I would have voted for it in a heartbeat.

Star Wars is fantasy not Sci Fi!

Sci Fi is about projecting in what mess we will end up if we go from here without changes.

SW is about a boy facing his fate in order to become a hero -> Fantasy

Terminator 2 for the idea of the franchise because this is great Sci Fi stuff like Soilent Green!

Star Wars is a mix between Sci-Fi and Fantasy. You can't ignore space travel and robots from the mix. I would pick it too, although Empire would get my vote over it.

Like there was ever any doubt.

Also, yeah, Star Wars is a fantasy film in a sci-fi setting. I would question its eligibility for this poll, along with a couple of others.

I voted Star Wars (of course) though I love T2 and Back to the Future, also.

That's really, really tough. There are admittedly a couple that I haven't seen, and there are a couple that just don't do it for me... but there are five that I'm struggling to pick between.

I went with Back to the Future, purely because it's one of the movies that gripped my imagination, and got me hooked on science as a child. I think it's my agreement with the 'it's fantasy' that stopped me picking Star Wars... though I guess it's a complicated issue.

I voted SW but Blade Runner is a close second. However, Star Wars and ET are the only ones I saw as a child, and I loved SW the most, so its my favorite.

So how is A Clockwork Orange sci-fi? Because of the whole futuristic setting and the government/social implications?

I'm going to have to say Back to the Future

Its portrayal of a dystopian future England; in particular its youth, their language, and their ultra-violent tendencies. Also, let's not forget the Ludovico Technique which is where the book and film get their titles, the idea of removing someone's free will to prevent them from committing crimes in the name of social renovation.

Although I too feel there are a couple options missing, based just upon what is listed, I chose Blade Runner.

WTF WHY ISN'T ALIEN VS PREDATOR: REQUIEM ON THIS LIST, ZOMG AMAZING MOVIE, BEST EVARRR! GRR!

Seriously though, there are some great movies on that list. Also as people have said, some don't deserve to be there while others that are absent really should be considered. I've been a fan of the Alien franchise since I was 6 or 7 when I saw Aliens, and finally saw Alien when I was around 12. You might say thats a ridiculously young age to watch an 18-rated movie but I was quite mature and into monsters and blood and gore and stuff like that - and it certainly never affected me and turned me into a serial killer like some people say. Rather, it's enriched my life in terms of my interests and hobbies when it comes to the book, film and game genres I like, as well as my personal writing focus.

The setting of that first film is just pure awesomeness. The creepiest, darkest, dankest ship I've seen in a sci-fi setting, and the creature itself is badass. Great characters and a great script.

Thank you Ridley Scott, and thank you H.R. Giger.
