ORIN / ARTHUR CURRY / AQUAMAN
90+ :: Atlantean / American :: Superhero (Retired) / Lighthouse Keeper
Currently in: Happy Harbor
Character Background
- Arthur Curry is the son of Atlantean royalty and a human lighthouse keeper, and is the in-exile Prince Orin, heir to the throne of Atlantis. Despite appearances, he is believed to be almost a century old.
- During the Second World War he was one of the Seven Soldiers of Victory, fighting alongside Wonder Woman and others as part of the Allied cause. During the Cold War he continued to work with the US military, but retired when the Justice Society of America was disbanded and the "Golden Age" of heroes came to an end.
- For the last few decades, Curry has owned and operated a lighthouse in Happy Harbor, Rhode Island, and considers himself to be retired - though he does on occasion assist the Justice League.
Raw Material
- Arthur is old, and bitter, and jealous. Many of the people he knew and fought alongside have died, but they also managed to live happy lives, start family, and leave a legacy behind through their children. Arthur lost his father to old age long ago, has yet to be welcomed back to Atlantis - the only place where he might fit in. He does still interact with Wonder Woman on occasion - whose life in exile was longer than his - but since her return to Themyscira with her daughter, Arthur feels almost betrayed by her no longer sharing in his misery.
- That all changes when Aquaman gets into a fight. Conflict fills him with a sense of purpose. Conflict for a cause is best, but he'll crack any pair of skulls together if they happen to be in arms reach and are deserving of it.
- Because he was active during the "Golden Age", there is some degree of public awareness of Aquaman. Unfortunately, that public awareness is not always flattering. Arthur and his powers are often the butt of jokes and comedy sketches, who fixate on his "useless" ability to "talk to fish", making a mockery of a man who was once a proud, noble, and patriotic warrior. Combined with shifts in politics, and humanity's blight on the climate and environment, Aquaman will help save the world when called upon out of a sense of duty, but doesn't necessarily believe that the world deserves saving.
Plot Ideas
- Encounters with other ye olde heroes (Wonder Woman, Jay Garrick, et al), if any are still around.
- Occasional Justice League stuff and things.
- Mentoring the occasional young hero? Answering questions about the past, since the truth has been hidden away?
- Being pestered by reporters who think they're super clever for having figured out where he lives, and think that entitles them to answers. It does not. Get off my lawn.
- Getting tangled with Checkmate (via Jay Garrick/etc)?
- Flashbacks?
- Swimming lessons.
- Brooding lessons.
- Hair advice.
Existing Relationships
- Jay Garrick - 1940s/50s Flash. Aquaman used to fight alongside him, back in the day.
- Wonder Woman - One of Arthur's few surviving peers. He's grumpy that she got to have a kid and go home.
Current Plots
- Droo hasn't started the thread yet!
