OLIVER JONAS QUEEN / GREEN ARROW
Thirties :: American :: Vigilante / Attractive Rich Guy
Currently in: Gotham City
Character Background
- Oliver's parents died when he was in his teens, in an accident while on safari in Africa. He was raised by William Glenmorgan, his mother's brother, who took charge of Queen Industries until Oliver was older.
- Glenmorgan did not approve of the "billionaire playboy" lifestyle that Oliver chose for himself, and presented Oliver with an ultimatum: join the military and prove that he could be dedicated and responsible, or forfeit his inheritance. Official records state that, during a mission alongside ARGUS, Sergeant Queen was killed in action when his transport was lost in a storm in the Pacific.
- Unofficially, Oliver Queen died, and the island where he experienced his exile was Purgatory; and though five years passed on the outside, the time Oliver experienced was much longer. He was eventually freed from Purgatory when the Spectre, the Angel of Vengeance, approached him with an offer of resurrection in exchange for becoming the Spectre's vessel on Earth.
- Oliver returned to Star City after five years, and was dismayed to find his home riddled with corruption and crime. He became a vigilante, known at first as The Hood, and was somewhat ruthless in his approach to executing justice. That eventually changed, after the Spectre was exorcised from Oliver and found a new host, and Oliver became a much more bright and inspirational vigilante, adopting the name Green Arrow and setting his sights on protecting the innocent and the vulnerable. Despite government and DEO sanctions prohibiting the activities of vigilantes, the SCPD has been relatively open in their gratitude for Green Arrow's assistance, and Star City has adopted Arrow and his chosen motif as something of a mascot.
- After stumbling across evidence of nefarious dealings by his family's company, Queen Consolidated, Oliver has travelled to Gotham City to begin investigating their activities. He has managed to convince the QC board to let him work for the company, taking on an "out of the way" and "harmless" role as an executive overseeing the tabloid newspaper that QC owns: the Gotham Globe.
Raw Material
- Presumed dead, Oliver has lost control/ownership of the family business, but has been provided an allowance by the Queen Estate. He's not Batman rich, but is still celebrity rich.
- A lot of what happened to Oliver on the island is not known by anyone, and he tends to make up stories whenever anyone asks, so no one is quite sure which of them (if any) are true. The stories about fighting dragons and zombies aren't, but fighting mercenaries, assassins, and drug cartels is slightly more plausible.
- Oliver's experiences as a host of the Spectre haunt him. While he was not in control of his actions, he still feels a sense of responsibility for the "righteous executions" the Spectre committed, and even with the Spectre gone he still struggles with urges to relapse into those tactics. Oliver has made a vow not to kill, instead embracing an assortment of non-lethal "trick" arrows that he uses to disable and subdue. He does carry arrows capable of inflicting serious or fatal wounds, "just in case", but regards the active choice not to use them as a constant test of his will.
Plot Ideas
- Green Arrow is in Gotham City investigating reports of malpractice by Queen Consolidated. This includes the latest technology winding up in criminal hands, and reports of illegal testing on residents of the Narrows (and possibly at Arkham), plus a bunch of other shady stuff.
- Oliver will (eventually) be getting a job working at Queen Consolidated so he can snoop around it's research projects. Anyone wanting to get involved and roleplay as a villain (or hero!) that might be working for Queen Consolidated would be most welcome! QC's secret projects mostly focus on making people more effective soldiers/operatives - performance enhancing drugs, gadgets and gizmos, cybernetics, etc. Also, anyone who makes use of those sorts of things would be welcome as an operative / test subject.
- Green Arrow will continue to help out in Gotham City while he is here. I would love to start putting together a little team/group/family for the vigilantes in Gotham who aren't part of the Bat Family (= the Outsiders?), especially if those people are up for helping out with the Queen Consolidated plot arc.
- Queen Consolidated is secretly controlled by Checkmate, a chess-themed secret spy organisation. QC is being used to research and develop new tech, techniques, steroids, serums, weapons, etc that can be used by Checkmate operatives in the field. Some of these doodads may end up in the hands of criminals in Gotham for "testing", while others might be tested on unsuspecting innocent bystanders.
Existing Relationships
- Mia Dearden - Oliver's current sidekick, Red Arrow. She came to Gotham with the Arrowcar. Might be staying?
- Roy Harper - Oliver's original sidekick, Arsenal. He is supposed to be covering as Green Arrow in Star City while Oliver is in Gotham, but recent events (like finding out he got his assassin ex pregnant) have complicated that somewhat.
- Connor Kent - A clone, created by combining Oliver's DNA with that of Superman. Connor is not yet aware that he is Oliver's "son"; Oliver has been quietly helping him under the pretence of a benevolent mentor, until he better understands the nature of Connor's creation and purpose.
- Tatsu Yamashiro - Officially Oliver's bodyguard, though mostly because she is too formidable and threatening for a different cover story to be plausible. A former Japanese police officer that Oliver knows from his prior adventures, she is assisting Oliver in his investigation into Queen Consolidated (and his vigilante activities, as Katana) in exchange for his help finding the answer to a mystical curse that she believes is affecting her comatose husband.
- Mal Duncan - An old friend that Oliver knows from an undisclosed point in his past. He is a tech genius; by day he works as a mechanic at an unassuming garage in Gotham, but by night is responsible for much of the gadgetry in Oliver's trick arrows, and his Arrowcar. Currently he is Oliver's "guy in the chair", but that likely will not last.
- Raisa Janež - An unassuming maid who has known Oliver since his childhood, and has been helping in Oliver's interactions with Connor.
- Bruce Wayne - An old friend of Oliver's from Brentwood Academy. He is (mostly) tolerant of Oliver's vigilante antics in Gotham City, but for the most part Oliver tries not to push his luck too much. No one wants to be on the bad side of Batman.
- Green Lantern - A new vigilante that Oliver encountered. Doesn't know his secret identity yet.
