If its alright, I'll throw my own journal entries in there but it'll be from my position in the military, which I thought would be interesting given how prepared/unprepared the government would be.

I think that the flares would work in a 'line of sight' sort of thing, where the flares would only affect the 'day' side of the earth. As they'd be going off fairly constantly for quite a while that still makes things pretty gnarly for Earth, but I suppose if someone had managed to shield a vehicle from the EMP they would be able to be mobile at night. Maybe? Feel free to contradict me (I'm thinking mainly for government vehicles).
Since the emp effect puts out Europe, Africa and Asia first, the Americas would have some warning, though there would be precious little the general population could do...

A horrifying read, about the after effects a nuclear bomb created EMP would have on the US (or any country). Maybe I should start digging a well now, or move by a river.
