If you get a chance to pick up that Clone Wars book dealing with Yoda, in there is the description of a tournament like that. It was a valuable insight into Jedi Temple proceedings.

We'll need a conflict of some kind to make it interesting. Something to do with padawans and knights being paired...? O_o

There were multiple ways for a Padawan to be chosen by a master. Every so often tournaments were held within the temple that allowed students to compete against each other in order to prove themselves worth of apprenticeship in the eyes of visiting Masters. Obi-Wan Kenobi once competed in such a tournament to win the favor of Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn. Occasionally a master would develop a bond with one of the temple students and either request to become their master or outright declare that they would train the student if the Council did not approve as Qui-Gon Jinn, and later Obi-Wan Kenobi, would do in order to take Anakin Skywalker as their apprentice. Once more a student may also be assigned to a Master by the Council as was the case of Ashoka Tano's apprenticeship to Anakin Skywalker.

One suggestion: the tournament is usually only about the older younglings, I think. While having a tournament open to all younglings now, might certainly distract them from the current events, it should also take into consideration a sort of "series of trials" for a few people in the Jedi Corps who poreviously didn't show enough promise to find a Master to train them.

I was going to pass on responsibility of the tournament, acting as a referee (during which she'd have to use her force skills) and various aspects of it to my Corps char Taman Danar, as a kind of trial for her to be considered for padawanship after all. Similarly, Salemescro could be given similar tasks, that would lead to chosen by a Master. Maybe we can invent a couple of other corps NPCs that would also be given a task. It would certainly make sense in the way that the Order needs more trained Jedi after the loss at Geonosis.
