Character Background
Bette is an only child - her father wanted a boy but tomboy Bette was the closest he was going to get.
He taught her how to fly, shoot straight, took her hunting, and when she expressed a desire to attend the fighter pilot academy on Carida, he pulled as many strings as he could to get her in. Fatherly desire only took her that far, however, and Bette soon made a reputation for herself as a by-the-book straight arrow student.
She graduated and was assigned to the fleet as a shuttle pilot, one of the first female pilots in the Imperial Navy and certainly the only one on the ISD she was assigned to.
Bette had to work to earn a spot in the TIE squadrons (see "Shadows of our Fathers") in an unconventional way, due to the shadowy nature of an assignment from ImpIntel and a cocky pilot named Silus Xilarian.
Assigned to Shadow Squadron (https://www.sw-fans.net/wiki/index.php/Shadow_Squadron) before the Battle of Yavin, Bette was in the wing of Kelly Perris (https://www.sw-fans.net/wiki/index.php/Kelly_Perris), a handsome Alderaanian pilot. When Alderaan (https://www.sw-fans.net/wiki/index.php/Alderaan) was destroyed by the Death Star Perris defected, going AWOL and joining the Rebel Alliance (https://www.sw-fans.net/wiki/index.php/Rebel_Alliance). For the first time Bette began to question the values of the Galactic Empire (https://www.sw-fans.net/wiki/index.php/Galactic_Empire), but loved flying too much to let questions of morality bother her. Whenever her conscience would start to prick her, she began to use alcohol to quiet it. Bette also began a tumultuous relationship with a fellow pilot, Val Torre (https://www.sw-fans.net/wiki/index.php/Val_Torre), and they were as famous for their fights as they were for making up from them.
Eventually her hellraising ways got the better of her and she was transferred from the Shadows to Hellfire Squadron, a training squadron. After some time there she was eventually able to transfer back to the Shadows, under new Shadow Leader Tannis V'larr.
After Tannis was called up to R&D on a full time basis, Bette was promoted to Commander and made Shadow Leader.
