SERGEANT NIKOLAI MAZANDARAN
38 :: Alliance of Free Planets :: Mechanic
Currently aboard Jovan Station

Character Background

Kolya grew up on the streets of Antar 4 after a his parents were killed in a Senate Commando raid intended to capture his father, an Antarian Ranger. Surviving largely on his own, Kolya became involved with local gangs and organised crime, and by his teens was in so deep that it took enlistment in the Imperial Army to escape.
While serving, he became romantically involved with Kiana, the daughter of a senior officer. Though initially disapproving, Kiana's father warmed to Kolya over time, making arrangements for him to retrain and transfer to a safer branch of service so that he and Kiana could start a life together. The two married, and when their daughter Nicola was born, everything seemed perfect; but while still young, Nicola became sick, and over the course of diagnosis and treatment it was discovered she was Force sensitive. Kiana's father disowned them, going so far as to have Kolya transferred to the Outer Rim - out of sight, and out of mind. Nicola's condition continued to decline, but Imperial hospitals refused treatment, not wanting to "endanger other patients". Despite her parents' best efforts, Nicola passed away. Kolya blames the Empire for her death, and joined the Rebel Alliance not long after. (Approx. 4 BBY)
Kolya joined SpecForce, initially as a 7th Regiment technician before transferring to the Urban Combat Specialists, where his experiences on Antar 4 could be used to full effect. He rose through the ranks to Sergeant, commanding his own Squad; and though consistently reluctant to accept more responsibility or authority, was due for promotion to Lieutenant by the time of the Battle of Endor. Shortly thereafter, Kolya and his squad were deployed to the Anoat Sector where they were caught by the Iron Blockade, one of the "contingency" reactions to Palpatine's death. Many of his squad were killed, but Kolya was sent to an Imperial black site known as The Crypt, where he remained for several years.
A few years before the Treaty of Ktil, Kolya escaped from Imperial custody under dubious circumstances. There is some question over whether he escaped or was released, and rumours persisted that prisoners incarcerated at The Crypt may have been subject to brainwashing and experimentation. Though the Alliance could find no medical evidence to support such suspicions, Kolya was held in detainment until the Treaty was implemented.
As a result of legal wording in the Treaty relating to Imperial officers defecting to the Alliance, Kolya's attorney was able to secure his release. Though the option to leave and lead a civilian life was available, Kolya declined: he petitioned to return to service, agreeing to accept a number of security stipulations to abate the Alliance's continued paranoia. Unwilling to let him serve with a gun in his hand, Kolya is currently a mechanic on Jovan Station.

Raw Material

Though the name "Nikolai Mazandaran" appears in his birth records and his Imperial personnel file, he prefers to be known as Kolya: his mother's nickname for him as a child, and the name he was known by among the gangs on Antar 4. When the Rebel Alliance started to formalise, he requested that Kolya be used as his name in official records - thus, "Sergeant Kolya" is the proper form of address.
Kolya is tolerant of being called Kole for short. He is less tolerant of being called Nikki (usually for very close/old friends).
The restrictions on Kolya's continued Alliance service prevent him from carrying a firearm, and limits his security clearance - preventing him from entering (and thus performing maintenance in) certain key areas of Jovan Station. Kolya is not entirely happy about this, but has been willing to accept the restrictions in order to continue serving - he does not feel he has anything left to live for.
Kolya learned to fight on a planet full of Gotals. His technique in hand-to-hand is unorthodox, but effective.

Plot Ideas

Officers and Residents on Jovan Station being suspicious of and even hostile towards Kolya. Whispers about him in bars and corridors, grudgingly being assigned to work the same detail, etc?
Intelligence and Security types giving Kolya a hard time.
Old friends who remember Kolya from "before"?
Parts of his criminal past coming back to haunt him.
Something to do with his wife or father in law?
People seeing Kolya as a potential "weak link" to exploit. Bribes, blackmail, information brokers, etc?

Existing Relationships

Kiana Mazandaran - Kolya's wife. Though separated, they are still married; but have not spoken in fifteen years.
Nicola Mazandaran - Kolya's daughter. When Kolya was (mildly) disappointed about not having a son that he could call Nikolai Junior, Kiana suggested that they name their daughter Nicola. While alive, Kolya would call her Junior as a pet name.
