Kal Doran
28 :: Mandalorian/Independent/Independent :: Mercenary

Character Background

Born on Mandalore to Arin (mother) and Tyfo (father) of Clan Doran
Eldest of 3 brothers (Kyf, Dex, and Trim) and 2 sisters (Lin and Max)
Trained in various martial traditions (Mandalorian, Echani, Zabrak), as well as the finer points in flying
Taught diplomacy, languages, and history by parents, instilling within him a profound respect and curiosity for other cultures and people
One of several Mandalorain youths drafted into the Imperial Academy to instill loyalty in Mandalorian subjects who questioned Imperial rule, Clan Doran chief among them
Made several friends out of fellow cadets, chief among them a Corellian named Soap, or so was his nickname
During a training exercise, was ambushed by Rebel pilots. Soap was among the casualties
Fled the Academy after a plot by the rival Clan Duskan, with the backing of the Empire, killed his parents and destroyed his ancestral home
Finding no sign of his siblings, Kal took to the stars to create his own legacy, though he does not know what it will be
Kal now travels the galaxy in a heavily modified YV-929 armed freighter named "Gentle Persuasion", seeking Mandalorian artifacts and the possible whereabouts of his lost siblings

Raw Material

Stands 6' even, though taller with his armor, which he customizes and paints himself
Strictly follows the Resol'nare, and holds nothing but contempt for Mandalorians who shy away from their heritage or otherwise try to disguise who they are
Will not deceive others as to who he is, which has led to some interesting entanglements on all sides of the law
Goes out of his way to experience culture, especially where food and combat are involved
Tirelessly hunts for Mandalorian artifacts so as to preserve his rich heritage while getting some great gear in the process
Seeks to learn from other cultures whenever possible, though holds no love for pacifists

Plot Ideas

Any rumors about his family will cause Kal to hunt down the lead, no matter how foolhardy
Mandalorians love their hidden caches, so why not go all out on a tresure hunt?
A few months back, Kal picked up some traffic on his comms and heard someone, in Soap's voice, use Soap's callsign. The dead aren't supposed to speak
Kal has all the talents that a mercenary needs, so he can be muscle on any mission, as long as it doesn't help out the Empire. He'll even take jobs that don't pay well, as long as the Empire somehow loses from it

Existing Relationships

Little Biro - A Hutt on Nar Shaddaa who controls territory in the Red Light District and occasional employer of Kal
Mal - Former Exchange Operative and current cantina owner. Kal owes her a night at the opera
Kyf, Dex, Trim, Lin and Max - Kal's siblings. Presumed abducted by the Empire
Soap - A Corellian and friend to Kal during both of their time in the Imperial Academy. Presumed dead after a Rebel attack, but currently working in the Alliance

Current Plots

A hidden Mandalorian cache of Stygium (https://www.sw-fans.net/forum/showthread.php?57537-Stygium-amp-Slicers) is waiting to be plundered
A Rodian is looking to sell information to the Alliance for his own protection and profit (https://www.sw-fans.net/forum/showthread.php?57544-Sithspit)

I like this plotter. Very interesting character and with a lot of thought put into their history and motivations.

We have a few mandalorian and mandalorian-derived characters here so there might be something for Kal to do to search for clues with them.

Mandalore the Liberator

Speaking of other Mandalorians! :wave

Just to give you a quick nutshell lowdown on the Mandalorians currently: about a year-ish ago, the Alliance and Imperials had a bit of a nuclear arms race that ended in a ceasefire. Mandalore the Liberator exploited that to lead an uprising, and when the Alliance and Empire signed the Treaty that has led to our current cold war scenario, the freedom / independence of Mandalore and the surrounding systems was protected.

Over the last year, Mand'alor has been trying to figure out how to get all the different kinds of Mandalorians to live together in peace (ish). Right now we have a Parliament based on the New Mandalorian government, a High Council consisting of the True Mandalorian clan leaders, the "royal guard" are rocking Death Watch colours, and the Bounty Hunters Guild is making itself at home on Mandalore as well. We've also got some long-separated Mandalorians from Dxun who answered Mand'alor's call during the uprising, but they're in the background and haven't been explored too much yet.

Since Kal is the oldest surviving member of his clan, a possible story option is to have him claim his seat on the High Council. That might be a good way to rub shoulders with some of the existing Mandalorian folks, and might open up some options. There's also a Mandalorian embassy on Jovan Station (a hub where a lot of Alliance characters hang out) - the person who writes the ambassador is on a bit of a hiatus at the moment, but I write one of the embassy guards who is (secretly, ish - kinda like Garak on Deep Space Nine) a former ISB operative, so that might be an angle worth looking at as well.

Claiming a seat on the High Council would be an incredible story, and I definitely want to meet all of the fellow Mandalorians. Where would that thread take place?
