GUNNER RODES
24 :: Alliance of Free Planets :: Recon Pilot
CURRENTLY ON: JOVAN STATION
Character Background
It can be said that Gunner did not have the happiest of childhoods. At age 3, he was abandoned at an orphanage on Chandrila. There, he was raised, with all the other bastard kids. And it was during these years that Gunner came to realise he was a little different: he struggled to socialise, and blanched at physical contact, he misinterpreted sarcasm, and didn't understand humour. The grown-ups said he was autistic, but the kids called him weird. Over the years, he took solace in routine, and in amassing curious collections of everything from smashball cards and droid parts, to soda cans and ticket stubs.
Then, on a tragic school camping trip, aged 13, Gunner survived a terrible traffic collision that killed every other student onboard. The scale of the tragedy attracted media attention, as did the case of its sole survivor: comatose, Gunner was treated by a famous neurosurgeon, Dr. Alo Andela, who came all the way from Alderaan to operate on him. During the procedure, a prototype cybernetic implant was installed to help stimulate brain activity and facilitate the processing of information. The surgery was a success, however, further tragedy was to follow when Alderaan, the homeworld of Dr. Andela, and his wife, was destroyed in their absence. But, rather than giving in to despair, the couple kindled hope from the ashes of their great misfortune, and built a new home on Chandrila, with their newly-adopted son, Gunner.
Such were the lessons learned from growing up with the good doctor, and his wife. Gunner was taught to embrace his differences, and to be fearless; with therapy, and no shortage of patience and love, he developed his social skills, made jokes, and enjoyed a good life of privilege and wealth. Until he turned 19, when the cruel hand of fate upended his fortunes one last time. Alo and Kess Andela were both murdered during a raid on their family home. Security footage failed to reveal the identity of their killer, but given the nature of the attack, and the sensitive materials stolen from Alo's lab, authorities suspected it had been carried out by an Imperial agent.
Following the death of his adoptive parents, Gunner prematurely ended his studies, and joined the Alliance. Being multilingual, coupled with his keen intellect, and his powers of data analysis, he would've been well-suited for a comfortable office job, but it wasn't enough to be supporting the Alliance against the enemy that murdered his parents, he needed to be on the front line. He had a knack for flying, enjoying the relative solitude of small ships, compared to the bustle of a star cruiser, and was assigned to Jovan Station, as a recon pilot, with Tristan Tahmores.
Raw Material
As much as Gunner wishes to know why his parents were killed, his strongest, and most private, motivation is to find the person who stole his family from him, and have his revenge.
He has attempted to find his biological mother on several occasions, with no luck.
His intelligence is a by-product of his need to keep his mind occupied, coupled with his intense obsessive nature.
The neurological implant allows him to process and retain data at extraordinary speed. Sometimes, the input can be overwhelming, forcing him into solitude, but he is just as quickly bored, and may find himself in search of stimulus, instead.
Punctuality is sacrosanct to him. He lives and dies by routine, and does not like his schedule interrupted.
At the academy, he was nicknamed "Tick-Tock" for his uncanny time-keeping, and "Gundark" for his ears.
Cleanliness and good hygiene standards are also important to him. If he sees you drop litter, he will chase you down to the ends of the galaxy with it.
Gunner has trained himself to deal with social interaction. He knows the rules, understands the game, but it is still all sport to him - there will be times when he drops the ball.
He is an open book and wears his heart on his sleeve. His honesty can be painful. He likes to be liked.
Physical contact with strangers makes him uncomfortable. The exception being an attractive stranger, in which case he will power through his hang-ups.
He is proficient in numerous languages, including Bothese, Huttese, Rodese, Ithorese, and Zabraki. Most recently, he has been practising Shyriiwook, which has been upsetting the neighbours.
Gunner has the complete set of smashball cards, from every season, for the last 16 years. He hates smashball.
He loves jizz music.
He enjoys making cocktails.
On mission, he reads his favourite children's books, and records his conversations with fellow pilot, Tristan, to remind himself of any important personal information he might have ignored.
