History
Early Years
Shortly after Wayland was abandoned by the Empire, those left behind traveled North from Imperial Research Station 51 with their families, in search of a safer place to settle than the Jungle. Eventually, they came to the polar mountains and, though life proved tough, they formed a thriving settlement. Soon, however, bands of roving Marauders began to stumbled onto the Imperials' new home. At first, the former Stormtroopers and Army Personnel managed to fend these Marauders off but, over time, it became apparent that a more permanent solution would be needed.
And so the Wayland Irregulars were born.
The name Irregulars came from the mismatched armor and assorted weaponry that the families had in their possession. Heirlooms, antiques and ornaments were brought back to working order and patched with furs, hides and metal plates. The name stuck with them from the earliest days, a source of both pride and humor.
Over the years, the Irregulars grew to the size of a small Company, totaling eighty men. When a member of the Irregulars retired or was killed, there were always eager new recruits waiting to compete for the honor of replacing him.
So it was for a generation, until what was later christened "The Battle of Wayland"
The Battle of Wayland
When the Imperials returned to Wayland years later, they encountered a horde of Marauders, the largest ever massed on the planet, presumably with the goal of destroying the Settlement once and for all. Four teams of twenty Irregulars had been scouting the area for days beforehand and, as luck would have it, heard distorted Imperial communications over their aging comm-links. Unsure of the source of these transmissions, the teams regrouped just before dawn and, loosing their sled-dogs who promptly returned to the settlement as they had been trained to do, began marching toward the signals.
When they arrived, they witnessed a battle already raging between the Imperial Forces and the Marauders. Catching a group of flanking savages in a dry but deep creek-bed, the Irregulars joined the fray.
Thirty seven men, including the Irregulars' commanding officer, Captain Jakob Ivarrson, gave their lives in service of an Empire they were too young to have ever seen. The Captains body was found surrounded by more than a dozen slain marauders. For his bravery and sacrifice, he was posthumously awarded the Imperial Medal of Valor and is regarded by the Irregulars as a hero and role model.
Return to Imperial Service
In the aftermath of the battle, memorials were held for the thirty-seven Irregulars and the members of the Imperial Forces that had died during the battle. In the weeks that followed, the consensus was reached that the Marauders had been so soundly beaten that it would be a very long time indeed before they considered raiding again. The people of Wayland and the Empire decided to take immediate advantage of that fact. In a few short months, the settlement in the mountains nearly tripled in size. Imperials were flooding to the sector, eager to escape overcrowded worlds or to unite with distant relations they had previously been unaware of.
With the growth of the settlement, now christened Jakobskeld, came the need to grow the Irregulars. Two Imperial Officers, former Stormtroopers, named Colonel William Norton, formerly of the 501st Legion, and Lieutenant Colonel James Howe, formerly of the 102nd Legion, were dispatched to Wayland to take their place as CO and XO of the unit. Along with them came new recruits from both Wayland and Offworld totaling one hundred and sixty. When combined with the surviving forty-three Irregulars and more than fifty support staff, they were now the first of a planned four companies.
In recognition of this increase, the Wayland Irregulars, a once humble colonial militia, was re-designated the 1st Battalion, Wayland Regiment, one hundred and sixty-fifth Legion.
