"Exiting hyperspace, Captain."

"All systems nominal, sir."

"Preliminary scans show everything clear."

Captain Felline was not a suspicious man. Unless presented with incontrovertible proof of malfeasance and underhanded dealings, he held to an ideal of optimistic skepticism.

But even he had to admit that perhaps he had done something wrong or more likely associated with someone with too little reluctance and was being punished as indirectly as was possible, with a two month long cruise quietly patrolling the quietest stretch of the border, between hyperlanes no less, was circumstantial evidence that grated.

The stars went from lines to specks, and a silhouette loomed in front of them.

"Rogue planet 23-K-RT108-7F," he sighed. "Begin scans of the surface. Focus on life signs and irregularities in topographical data."

"Aye sir, beginning scans."

He stood, watching the dark planet as it careened through space quietly, as if it were standing still at breakneck speed. At its present course and speed, it would cross from Imperial space into Alliance space in a little under a year, and it was thought that smugglers and those fleeing the now quieting purges of the military might use it as a staging point in travelling secretly between the major galactic powers.

Felline turned from the viewport with a controlled burst of air from his nostrils.

"Look alive then," he said as he marched back to his seat. "The sooner we finish this, the sooner we can get on to something of real value."
