Onika Zepparah
16 :: Human-Twi'lek hybrid/Galactic Empire/Imperial Knights :: Cadet
Currently on: Coruscant
Character Background
Onika is the bastard daughter of a mid-level Imperial bureaucrat named Arden Thane and his mistress, a Twi'lek florist named Alura Zepparah. For the first ten years of her life, she split time between her father's opulent household and her mother's humble shop in the Chiba District alien ghetto. Arden doted on her, but his wife despised her, and never wasted an opportunity to remind her that she didn't belong. Eventually Alura began fraternizing with another wealthy imperial, destroying any illusion Onika still had of having a family.
As she grew older, Onika found camaraderie in a gang of alien kids in her mother's neighborhood. She learned a great deal from them - how to steal, how to evade the law, where to find cheap entertainment both legal and illicit. She took advantage of her continued access to the Thane household by stealing small items, trivial things a wealthy family wouldn't miss but that could be sold handsomely on the street.
This ended when she stole a corusca globe that, unbeknownst to her, was valued over twenty thousand credits and equipped with a tracking chip. She was arrested, interrogated, and returned to her father in cuffs. To her shock and shame, he told the officers he had given it to his daughter as a gift, and sent them on their way. He then took it upon himself to enroll Onika in the Wilhuff Tarkin Secondary School.
Onika tried to progress through school as invisibly as possible, terrified that her next infraction would bring all the deferred punishment of her previous crimes on her head. For the most part, she succeeded, though she needed tutoring to bring her up to the level of her peers in most subjects. However, near the end of her third year at Tarkin, she was assaulted by three members of the school's Wegsphere team, all well-respected boys from powerful families. Fearing for her safety, she fought back, seriously injuring them with an unexpected display of Force telekinesis.
That was when the Imperial Knights stepped in.
Raw Material
Onika is very much a child of two worlds, and isn't sure of her place in either of them. It's crossed her mind her life would be much simpler if she were either fully human or fully Twi'lek, and she's sensitive about her halfbreed heritage.
Her dual life has given rise to two very distinct sides of her personality: brooding, watchful, and reserved when among humans or authorities; bold, spontaneous, and direct among friends.
She's very slow to trust, especially with authority figures. The few friends she has, she's very loyal to.
Between her mother's disengagement, her father's unavailability, and the abuse heaped on her by Mrs. Thane and her children, Onika is very used to fending for herself.
Her mother enrolled her in dance lessons with "other" Twi'lek girls when she was nine. She encountered the same prejudice there she's come to expect from humans, but she learned a great deal about poise, balance, and motion.
She has no political aspirations beyond making it through the next day and securing some small happiness for herself.
