Jofar "Joey" Rabeak
Age: 25 :: Nehantite/Alliance :: Occupation: Fighter Pilot, Lieutenant Junior Grade
Currently in: Jovan Station

Character Background

Joey grew up on Nehantish as the son of a successful soldier-turned-engineer, and enjoyed a good life with two loving parents. As a teen he began to feel different, finding himself attracted to other males instead of to females, but he hid his desires as they were not politically acceptable in the kingdom of Nehantish. Still, it did not take him long to find himself a boyfriend - a young man who worked for his father.
The relationship turned physical, and it was difficult to hide, but they both managed until one day Anauri came home early and caught both in Joey's bed. Instead of being mad, Anauri wordlessly stepped back out, shut the door, and later talked to Joey to see if it was just curiosity, or what he really wanted. Confiding his preferences to his father, Joey admitted he was gay, and to his surprise Anauri was not upset, instead hugging him and telling him he just wanted Joey to be happy. Anauri kept the secret, even from Joey's mother.
Two years later, Joey's mother stumbled across the same scene, but instead of being accepting, she was furious. When it was revealed that Anauri knew, she called the authorities and reported him for actively encouraging the deviant lifestyle of a minor. Anauri was forbidden from ever seeing or contacting his son again, on pain of arrest, and the Rabeaks went through a bitter divorce with Mrs. Rabeak retaining custody of Joey. Joey hasn't seen his father since the morning of that day.
Upset with his life and the limitations he then faced on Nehantish because of his orientation , Joey entered college at eighteen, but grew disenfranchised with his home and country. At the age of twenty-one he dropped out to enlist in the Alliance military, as the Nehantite Royal Army would not take him due to his preference.
In the Alliance military, Joey found acceptance like he'd never known, and quickly gained confidence and flair, able to truly be himself for the first time in his life. That confidence directly translated to high scores and improved aptitude, until he was accepted into pilot training. Originally trained as a Y-Wing pilot, he found himself craving the speed, maneuverability and cool-factor of more agile craft, and talked his way into the X-Wing camp, where he turned out to be a natural.
He has just completed his four years in the Alliance Military Academy, and while he wasn't in the top of his class, Joey wasn't far from it, and had earned respect as a skilled, if not hotshot, X-Wing pilot, and his first assignment has been to Jovan Station to join Titan Squadron.

Raw Material

Joey still prefers males, but isn't a hound like Hal is.
He has a great desire to prove himself as his own man, and thrives on attention and earned respect.
Is actually a very competent engineer, under it all, having learned a great deal from his father before their forced seperation.
Has attempted to find his father, but has thus far been unsuccessful as Anauri has covered his own tracks in order to protect Joey.
Eager to please. Very eager to please. Maybe too eager, to the point of taking unnecessary risks at times.
Though he may not look it, Joey is big on tabletop roleplaying games, and has his own custom set of dice for just about everything.

Plot Ideas

Joey gets assigned to a squadron which has been involved in very bitter combat with heavy losses. The new guy isn't given much respect as the old guard misses friends they've lost, and don't care if the new kid is put in danger.
Assigned to the Novgorod where he has to learn quickly how a tight unit operates.
Assigned to Jovan Station, where commanding officers notice the name and physical resemblance to their chief engineer, eventually leading to a reunion of father and son. (Done!)
Joey falls sucker to a "honey trap" laid by an enemy of the Alliance, and gets his heart broken in the process. Then revenge.
Joey perhaps bungles a mission by being overzealous, and is punished by being slapped with "bus driver" duty as a personnel carrier pilot for those on Ossus for a fixed period of time.

Existing Relationships

Anauri Rabeak (Father): Joey and his father Anauri were very close when Joey was growing up, and Anauri loved spending time with his son. When Anauri found out that Joey was gay, he helped keep it a secret, supporting Joey's choice and allowed him to be himself despite how they both knew their society would see it. But it was found out when Joey was 17, and Anauri has been barred any sort of contact with him. For the following eight years, Joey had no contact with his father due to that ruling, but his first assignment put him at Jovan Station, where Anauri is Chief Engineer. Breaking their national law, Anauri found Joey and they have now met and caught up with each other, and are enjoying a fairly healthy father/son relationship now.
Raskor Shokus: Wingmate in Titan Squadron, Joey likes Raskor's laid-back, somewhat hedonistic attitude, but knows there's a lot more going on under that surface, and someday Joey will start to pry at that to find out.
Mags Sondeeta: Wingmate in a K-Wing squad on Titan Squadron, she's always icy and rude, and seriously needs to wax her legs, but Joey's sure there's some part of her that's kind and warm. It just might be an incredibly tiny part.
R2-DB: "Rustin' Deeber," "Dat Boi," or "Deebs," R2-DB is the new astromech assigned to Joey, keyed to his X-Wing. Unlike Joey's previous astromech, Deebs has no vox unit, and outside of their X-Wing Joey can't understand the droid at all, leading to constant arguments. They've only been together about a month, as Joey's previous astromech suffered a catastrophic hardware failure, and could not be repaired. Deebs is loud, opinionted, outspoken, and highly melodramatic.

Current Plots

The Flyboy: Joey arrives at Jovan, his first assignment out of the Academy.
Arranging Matches: Joey heads to the "tea house" to find it has little to do with tea, and lots to do with being naked. Whoops.
The Reunion: Joey gets a surprise visit from his father on his first day aboard Jovan.
