I just played a match against Michael using Vassal (http://www.vassalengine.org/)... kinda similar to Roll20. It took a little getting used to, working out which menus things were under... but it's pretty much just a matter of right-clicking the thing. All of the manoeuvres are built in, all of the dice rolls, and all that stuff. You do need to have the actual cards for your pilots/upgrades/damage handy (the text isn't included in Vassal, for I guess copyright reasons?), but that's hardly a problem.

Vassal works for other games too - you can download modules for Pandemic, Settlers of Catan, Risk and heaps and heaps of other tabletop games, with all the game boards and game pieces and all sorts of stuff built in, and it seems to support up to eight players... so if we ever want to do an international game night, we've got some options!

But anyhow, if anyone's got a spare afternoon and wants me to show them how the software works (and blow up my shiny A-Wings in the process), just give me a nudge!

Any excuse to play X-Wing is appreciated by me, whether tabletop or virtual. I'm not very good but I enjoy playing

I definitely need more practice.

I ran three A-Wings... which probably is not the smartest option for my first noob match, but in at the deep end and all that. I made some rookie mistakes - splitting up instead of ganging up on one target at a time, not remembering to fire my god damn missiles, etc - but it actually went a lot less worse than I was expecting. If I can get my head around how best to use Tycho Celchu, I feel like Operation A-Wing Fanboy might have some real potential to it.

So fun, though. I'm sure Vassal is a different experience to playing face-to-face (same as Roll20 is different to playing Banana in the same room)... but damn is this game enjoyable.

I've yet to actually play against a real opponent, so it would be nice to have a game, if I get the time.

Vassel is pretty quick, because you don't have to spend quite as much time rummaging around to find the right distance ruler and such. I think the match took about an hour, maybe a little over that, and that was with me being maximum noob. You can have spectators for a Vassal match too, so we could even hop in a Banana hangout a little early, and aim to finish as the Americans start appearing... and if we're still going, they can hop in Vassal and see what the blazes we're up to? :uhoh

I like this. Let's dogfight this weekend

And yeah I have built a squad using Tycho because his power seems so useful

Quick and easy Charley-friendly installation tutorial:

Step 1: Go here (http://www.vassalengine.org/download.php) and download the Vassal installer. Run the installer, and let it do it's magic.

Step 2: Find where Vassal is installed on your system. (for me it's in C:/Program Files/VASSAL-3.2.15/) Make a new folder in there to put your modules in. The name doesn't matter, but if you call it "modules" or something you're less likely to forget what the heck it is.

Step 3: Go here (http://www.vassalengine.org/wiki/Module:Star_Wars:_X-Wing_Miniatures_Game) and download the module for X-Wing. It's the one that says "module" as the file type - make sure you're getting the latest (5.6.5) version. Once that file downloads, put it in your "module" folder from Step 2.

Step 4: Open Vassal. Click on File, and select "New Module". Find the folder you created on Step 2, select the file you downloaded in Step 3, and then boom.

Adding your ships is pretty straight forward, but it's one of those "it's easier to explain it live" sorts of things. To make things a little easier, you might want to use one of the squad builder websites to online-ify everything. It gives you a handy thing like this (https://geordanr.github.io/xwing/?f=Rebel%20Alliance&d=v3!s!29:150,73:7:15:U.18;30:17:7:2:U.19;87:17:7: 2:U.19), where you can mouse over the stuff and read all the card texts. When you're done, make sure you click the "permalink" button in the top right there, then you can just copy & paste the url to people, and they can see what build you're rocking.

Things I am good at in this game:
- Flying aggressively
- Flying as many A-Wings as humanly possible
- Exploding

Things I am bad at in this game:
- Not exploding
- Remembering what my effing cards do
- Winning

If you happen to feel assaulted right now I think I can explain your situation with my linguistic skills:

English: assault [mil.] German: der Sturmangriff Pl.: die Sturmangriffe

After two or three hours, we declared a stalemate... otherwise Michael's T-70 would have been chasing Horton Salm around the map for the rest of eternity.

Y-Wings, man. I take back almost everything bad I have ever said about Y-Wings. :love

My reason for getting it was 90% wanting little ships on my desk.

Bumping this.

Any of you guys still want to play?

I've been playing X-Wing A LOT lately, going to my local shop at least twice a week for games and participating in tournaments. I'm really jonesing to compete.
