I think it's just very Tatooine like. Which I agree is a bit silly, maybe it should have just been Tatooine, but I suspect JJ Abrams wanted something similar to the originals without having the 'everything happens to this one planet' problem.

Bearing in mind that The Force Awakens includes a desert planet, an ice planet, and a forest planet... yeah, I think JJ Abrams being in Original Trilogy nostalgia mode and setting himself up for some iconically familiar visuals is a fairly safe bet.
