Reprising their roles from the original trilogy are Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Peter Mayhew, Anthony Daniels, and Kenny Baker. As more information comes in I'll edit this post accordingly. :)

Yeah, but girls don't buy action figures! Or something... :\
The woeful gender imbalance aside, I am thrilled that Max von Sydow is going to be in a Star Wars movie.

Something to bear in mind is that (with the original trilogy, at least) Star Wars is effectively a fairytale. Hell, it's even being made by Disney now. If there's one thing that Disney princess movies don't have, it's an abundance of female characters. Tangled and Frozen have, what, two? Three, if you count the mothers; and those are supposed to be the good, pro-female Disney movies?
It most definitely sucks from a numbers perspective, but this is JJ Abrams, who made Alias and who turned Uhura from the black secretary answering the space phone to an ass-kicking main character: it's too early to know whether this is gonna be a patriarchy snooze fest or not. Weren't there a lot of rumours about how the star of the movie was gonna be Han and Leia's kid? Certainly looks like Daisy is sitting on the couch between mom and dad. :ohno
I've seen a lot of speculation on the way that the cast is orientated. I think my favourite theory is that the right hand side of the picture is the "Solo family" (Han, Leia, R2, Chewie, and baby) and that the left hand side of the picture is "the Jedi", or at the very least, "the Force". I kinda like that idea, particularly if it means we're going to get Andy Serkis doing mo-cap on some alien Jedi, and Max Von Sydow as some sort of old Jedi sage dude. Plus, Adam Driver as a sort of... Jedi student seduced by the dark side? If that's not a Star Wars trope, I dunno what is.
Purely based on appearance, I'm wondering if maybe Bill Weasley is gonna be Luke's kid?

It'd be nice to think that Daisy, whoever she is playing, could be the main character.. but I doubt it. It's just so disappointing to have a central cast announced with only one female character (aside from Leia). I just don't think it's acceptable, even if it is a Disney movie / a fairy-tale.

Probably not worthy of a new thread, so I'll put this here.
The reported working title of Episode VII is "The Ancient Fear."
Rumor is that said title is related to Max von Sydow's character.
As always, take everything with a grain of salt.

A New Hope... The Ancient Fear. I can imagine them doing that.

I would not overthink the cast listing yet. First of all CGI characters normally get casted later (see Groot and Rocket Racoon) and the overhead from the original cast is already filling a few seats. SW has always been about the details in the background and the side characters so maybe the gender inbalance will be fixed here.
Everytime I see the picture of John Boyeta I get a Lando Vibe from his smile.

^ Yeah, I have my fingers crossed for him being a Calrissian. If all the theories are right about the left side of the circle being the Jedi / Force people... Jedi Knight Lando Jr would be pretty damn badass. :ohno

Maybe Lando uses the pulling out method of birth control, but sadly learned how to do it from Porkins?

Thing is, though, how many women were in the first Star Wars trilogy? Or the second, for that matter? Not many, and we all are here because of how awesome the first trilogy was. It is entirely possible to have a good story where the gender of the characters simply doesn't matter because the story is so good.

I don't think the number of women in previous films is relevant, although I do agree with you that the quality of a story isn't gender-dependent, and in light of that, it only bolsters the reasoning behind the question: "Where are the women?"

It's funny, "gender doesn't matter" is something that you rarely hear women say... in the same way that the words "race doesn't matter" or "sexuality doesn't matter" tend to come exclusively out of the mouths of white, heterosexual men.
Anyway, I'm not going to dwell on the issue, because if you don't see the problem here then there's a good chance that discussing it won't change your point of view, but this article touches quite succinctly on my problem with the lack of (meaningful) female characters here:

So glad you think so highly of me, being that I am a white, heterosexual man, and you can't possibly think I might mean exactly what I said, and do regard every gender, race or sexuality equally.
Or, to be more blunt, I just don't give a shit, give me a good story.

It's way too early to pronounce judgment on the new movie's casting decisions once and for all, as we have only the slimmest idea of the roles these actors will be playing. But given the criticism Star Wars has received before concerning its dearth of female roles, it would have been a very easy thing to imagine a story that could include some more important roles for women. Who knows, maybe there are main characters who haven't yet been cast/revealed. But an announcement like this could just as easily have removed all doubt.

Adam Driver captured in a SPY PHOTO (maybe) - is it a spoiler? Who knows! I've spoiler tagged the link because it sort of spells out what may or may not be happening with Driver's character.
